The Island, the ocean around the island, and everything you can see from the island will turn out to be inside the earth in a vast underground cavern, complete with artificial sky effects, and arftificial weather on a schedule (as noticed by Locke so he can predict the rain down to the minute). And not just the island, but a whole small archipelego of islands on a small ocean in a giant underground cavern. It is so tall, if you are on a raft and fire a flare up in the sky, it does not hit the ceiling.
Something about this location throws off the compass points. Either there is a tunnel system down from the surface (i.e. the real world above) or a big hole opens up every once in awhile and things drop in (remember when that bird flew out of a scene that looked like a canvas in Charlie's dream while the beechcraft plane flew in on the left of the frame and you hear airplane noises? something like that). Things drop in like the Black Rock, Rousseau's ship, the Beechcraft, flight 815. It is an experiment in utopia, a Noah's arc, a safe place while the outside world is 'cleansed' by a deadly virus. The cavern is ancient, but has been modified for this purpose (with all the special effects) in recent times.
Symbolism in "The Moth" is key : being buried and re-emerging into the world. Adam and Eve in the cave... The Whispers are just voices bouncing off the ceiling from certain points to certain other points, "whisper lines."
Where is it located? Probably under or near South Korea. Perhaps South Africa. Somewhere stable, with huge underground caverns, somewhere where giant mining operations can go on without raising a fuss. Somewhere with an abundance of sulfur in the ground. Somewhere Mr. Paik can monitor on his closed circuit TV system.
Who built it? Hanso, The U.S. Army, Widmore Construction, don't know. DHARMA Initiative is just the latest tenant.
And the monster that sounds like a roller coaster being pulled up a big hill? Giant walking mining machine thing.
Your thoughts?
