I've killed my lawn and am going to till it up on Thursday or Friday. Friday morning I am having 20 yards of compost delivered and over the weekend I'm preparing the garden. The front sunny part of the yard I am going to do tons of California native annuals for spring and a bunch of other annuals and perennials, the shady party will have a bunch of fuchsias and other shade plants, I'm going to have 3 big rectangular beds that I will use as trial beds to try out and compare different plants to see how they perform before I use them in clients gardens (probably going to trial different lavenders and penstemons first), on the west side of the house is a 16x22 foot veggie garden and next to that there will be a mediterranean style garden. On the big east side yard facing the street I eventually want to do a bunch of proteas, restios, grasses and succulents but that is going to have to wait a bit.

I'll post pics when everything is blooming this spring/summer. So happy to be in a house again.

Here is Billy's garden plan for this coming season:

-plant tomato plants from Home Depot
-transplant them 10 different times during the season because he thinks they have the varying needs of an infant

I did the first of my planting today. A bit tedious as I have to cage against gophers but better to take the time to do that now rather than be sad later when a blooming plant is devoured. Driving up to the bay area to my favorite nursery this weekend to fill up my car with more plants. Yay! So nice to have a garden again. This first big island bed is basically a mediterranean theme. (I scrapped the trial bed plan for now).

I'm bummed that the ground isn't frozen. Over the weekend I need to drag lots of branches to the burn pile but the ground will be very mooshy. On the bright side it might be possible to turn over the dirt in the new veggie garden and throw in some peat and manure unless the ground is frozen a few inches down.

The seedlings I planted last week are starting to come up. Cabbages, broccoli, tomatoes, and oregano. So far the peppers and eggplant haven't made an appearance. I plan to direct-sow the corn, okra, beans, peas and melons once I'm fairly sure that the stupidly-warm-for-March weather won't turn on us and give us a blizzard.

Already filled the planters by the front door with pansies and for once I can actually sow peas on St. Paddy's day. Daffodils and vinca are already blooming and it wouldn't surprise me if the forsythia blooms by the end of next week. Still no frst in sight, but it's hard to believe that was it for winter.

EVERYBODY WISH ME LUCK!

I "air layered" 3 branches on my flowering crabapple tree.

If they take, they will root, I'll cut off the branches, put them in pots, and essentially have full grown bonsaii.

(I've never done this before...and have learned that bonsai masters train the branches for years before they do the air layering to make them more compact and bushier. This is my first try....soooo...)

I used clear plastic so you can see when the roots develop....then covered that in black plastic to keep the sun off the roots.

In about 6 weeks, I'll know if it's working.

I need to do the same for a native ash tree that's going to die from ash borer. All my ash trees need to get systemic insecticide treatments until the bug has exited the area after killing all the non treated trees.

I started my morning glory, moon flower and gourd seeds about 2 weeks ago. They are coming up nicely. the gourds I'm doing this year are called bushel gourds. Hopefully I get a bunch so I can use them as planters next year.
