Not bad. Should be more interesting once we start seeing the films they have to make.

I actually like the way they are doing it cause by the time we get to the final group we will know everybody adequately and the competition will just be starting.
Not like idol where a handful we don't even know going into it. |

Carrie Fisher made me want to gag. I'm not sure this has hooked me. The usual internal personality conflicts ya da ya da ya da. I'd rather see the talent and we didn't see too much of that tonight. Tho I know it will come up later. A million is not a lot of money to make a movie with....

That's what I was thinking.
The winner certainly isn't going to be making a summer blockbuster epic with $1,000,000. |

I liked it - ended up a little disappointed it was only a one hour premiere and not two. I wanted to see more
I'm sticking with it |

Interesting, I loved how some people didn't know how to give a pitch and then whip boy went over the top. Carrie Fisher looked better then some of the interviews she didn't in recent years where it looked like her face was falling apart.
One of the pitches that Gary Marshal liked (I think it was the first one that they actually liked) sounded just like a movie that Gary Marshal would do. I'll be sticking with this for now... |

I like that Hillary chick. She seems to be very solid and is very well educated in this business. It was amazing how big the men ratio was to women. I guess not a lot of chicks are film makers?
For some strange reason, I actually loved it. However, they focused way too much on the eliminated contestant pitches rather than the people who made it through. |

Will's mouse-rat buddy comedy animated film sounded like a lot of fun to me. I liked his pitch. I think he'll probably go far in this competition based on the first edits he's getting.

This was probably the most poorly executed episode of a reality TV show EVER! They spent over 15 minutes building to the first challenge. They spent the next 30 minutes showing mostly rejects. That works for singing...(i.e., Idol)...it does NOT work for rejects pitching a movie. WAY too much time on the first challenge. They spend 15 min. minus 2 commercial breaks starting the 2nd challenge. They do not FINISH the 2nd challenge in the episode. They split it up! WTF?
total and complete incompetency. Fisher was an annoying fuck. Marshall was better served as a drunk relative Sunday night on B&S. Other guy was ok....but not enough personality to hold the entire freakin' hour. Can't recall the last time I was so bitterly disappointed in an hour of TV. Oh wait. Yes I can. Last night Heroes' finale. |

When did Carrie Fisher turn into Margot Kidder?
Other than that, I really liked it. I found it interesting. More than I can say for most reality shows these days. I think I'll stick with it. |

Well, I was looking forward to this and from what I've seen, I quite like the format for the show.
It's a shame we don't get to see a little bit of what these director's are capable of. They were shortlisted based on the strength of their submissions and it would have been interesting to see where they're coming from. Making the first task pitching a story is absolutely perfect. It's a deceptively simple thing but the fact remains that the story lives or dies based on the pitch. If you don't make a good pitch, you're not going to get anything made. I would have liked to see a more even mixture of good and bad pitches. We only saw a couple of good pitches but at least we can see how horribly wrong a pitch can go. I liked the five different loglines they had. Despite some of the loglines being more suited for a comedy or drama, they could still be adapted any way a storyteller wants. Three-man crew. Two characters. Three locations. One night to write a script. 24 hours to film. 24 to edit a 2-and-a-half minute short. It might be extremely tight but it's a very good test to see who can perform under pressure in all areas of filmmaking. I feel for some of them. Getting stuck with people you don't mesh with might be a problem but they have to do their best to work through it. Unlike AI, it's going to be tough to separate the good from bad within individual teams. All three members of each team are probably going to rise or fall based on their collective effort. So we're going to get our finalists next episode. After making a short film in teams, I wonder what the third assignment is going to be. Brett Ratner might not be the best director ever but he does have a commercial sensibility, like Garry Marshall and Carrie Fisher. I think as judges, they should cover each other well. The show looks like it's off to a good start. Production-wise, it's pretty basic. But it serves the format of the show. Not much more they can do to glitz up the process. It's not AI. Quote: They won't. That's the development deal they're getting. They come up with story ideas and develop them into viable scripts. Budget for filming is a separate issue. |

Re: On The Lot -- EPMB & Spielberg Team Up | ||
Quote: It's really awkwardly stuck between Idol and the typical Burnett show - on Idol you can get away with just shoving in lots of people's performances but bringing in interpersonal drama when we have no idea who's who, it gets hard to follow. If they just started with 20, the episode would have worked a lot better - they wouldn't have had to completely ignoring one logline either. I didn't get why "uptight priest meets crazy girl" plot was held up as being the best thing ever. That must explain why shit like 'Along Came Polly' gets made. I was expecting more colorful directors - I guess fashion designers, hairdressers and chefs are more interesting. Quote: Aren't they on the website somewhere? |

Quote: Not that I know of. The short films on the official website can be uploaded by anyone. Same goes with the section with actors' headshots. The website doesn't just focus on the show itself. The section on the contestants is not active yet. I assume it's because they only have profiles for the finalists. |
