I dunno. Tonight's "Spain and Portugal" category totally stumped me. I refuse to believe it's getting easier.

LOL StarRider.
The guy who guessed "Meteorologist" last night should be shot. Along with anyone who guesses an answer (question) that has already been and answer (question) during the game. God that's stupid. I kind think Jeopardy is like crosswords in a way. You learn the language after awhile and what to expect. Like anytime they ever use the word "orator" in a clue, the answer will always be Patrick Henry. |
Is Jeopardy really easier than in years past? I'd like to think i'm answering more questions correctly because i'm older and wiser. I must admit i never have thought that maybe the its the questions and not me.
Exactly! I'm a little depressed have I haven't been getting smarter. |

Yes, I was screaming at the TV "Idiot" when the man missed the final question.
Some categories are easier than others; I'd try out but, know nothing about the bible or mythology to name a couple categories so, it would be my luck they would be there. |

The Jeopardy buzzers are evil. Despot will agree with me, I think.
Someone asked how they work. There is a set of lights on either side of the board that you cannot see on TV. When Alex is done reading the question, the lights will go on. Only after they go on can you buzz in. If you get trigger happy, You are locked out for half a second, no matter how much you press the buton. By that time, someone will have usually gotten in ahead of you. Some people get the timing down PERFECTLY, as one of my opponents did. If that happens, its pretty much a lost cause. When I played, my opponent had it timed so well, that he was buzzing in before the lights ever went on. That's why you'll see people mashing on the buzzer like they want to kill it. *shrug* |

I had the same buzzer experience when I was on the show in September. I was up against a guy who had been practicing on the home computer Jeopardy game and he beat me to the buzzer nearly every time! Guess I should have played some Nintendo to prepare like my 14-year-old suggested. The categories are a crap shoot -- my game had US Senate History (who knows anything about THAT?) -- but the game right after mine had lots of categories that I could have aced. I did manage to come in second, and I beat the returning champion so my ego was soothed a little.

I tried out last year when the auditions came to Seattle.
I made the cut. However, what they don't tell you until you get there is that even if you fly all the way down there on the appointed day, you aren't guaranteed to play!! I decided to not spend my money(we're jobless) for a chance to MAYBE win some money. If they flew me down there and guaranteed I'd be on the show, I'd go. The hardest part of the audition was knowing just when to hit that buzzer. too soon, and you're blocked out. Too late, and someone else answers(usually correctly). Still, I'm not sorry I went and auditioned. It was quite the experience. |

Probably a smart move not to go, Tigeranne. I had to pay for my airfare, hotel, meals, etc. from Seattle to LA. Second place pays $2000 which did pay for my trip but third only gets $1000 so you really don't end up making much unless you are a big winner. It was lots of fun and I'm still glad I went even though I didn't end up with much in my pocket at the end.

Re: re: | ||

Mamaspud, thanks. I've been second guessing myself ever
since I didn't go. I know it might have been fun, but I really can't afford the trip. It would be gambling, which is anathema to me. I basically only auditioned to show myself that I could make the cut. OTOH, I 'made the cut' several times for Millionaire back when Regis was doing it nightly. They never called me back. I think THEY paid for everything, which would have been cool. I haven't watched Jeopardy much in the past year. Since I auditioned, it hasn't been the same somehow. strange, but true. I guess the "mystery" is gone. LOL |

You're right about the lights on the board and how you really have to time the buzzer. It's why I give my father mega-kudos for being a 4-time champion and finalist in the 1986 Tournament of Champions. He has benign essential tremor, and his hands shake pretty badly - but he still won!
I plan to try out later this year. If I make it, I'll be the third member of my family to be on the show, and we're trying to talk my mother into going for the Seniors Tournament. |

-------- I apologize if I sounded rude, I didn't mean to. I also congratulate your father, that is quite impressive! Good luck in your tryouts this year!!! Kick that test's ass, and let us know how you do! |

Re: re: | ||

I always wondered about that buzzer thing. You see somebody hitting it and hitting it and nothing happens, then another person chimes in and it lights right up.
I read the questions faster than Alex does. So if I ever did make the show, I'd be locked out almost every time. That would really suck. |

Re: re: | ||

Yeah, that's the big problem. You read through it, and know the answer, and get trigger happy. It is le suck. :( On one of my episodes, I got SO enfuriated with the buzzer, I actally put it down for the last few minutes of the show.
The other thing that sucks is Final Jeopardy. They play that damn music during it, and it is SO nervewracking. You can barely think. Stupid Jeopardy music. |

Re: re: | ||

That's funny about the music because I was just watching Millionaire and talk about annoying music. Ever notice that the volume goes up during the phone a friend?
And--- I'll still take Jeopardy over any other game show.Can you imagine a contestant saying Let's poll the audience. Give me 4 choices and then I can eliminate 2. |

Re: re: | ||
Quote: No problem! I was just agreeing with you about the buzzer and light around the board. Also, you also know that the players' totals are up and to the left of the board, so that's why you see players looking that way when they determine a Daily Double or Final Jeopardy bet. Quote: He's pretty impressive - even now! LOL! He would have run down that entire geography category from the other night - no problem. The only categories that he has a hard time with are music ones. He blew every music-related Daily Double he got! In the Tournament of Champions, during one of the early rounds, he was playing against an actor (who also wound up in the final), and wiped him out in the category of "Shakespeare First Lines." Quote: Thanks! |

Geography was my downfall. I know all sorts of other shit. Geography, Hell No! Luck in categories is a BIG part of Jeopardy! |
