It is getting a bit soapy though. And while firefighters are human too, a lot of them are very dedicated to their families. I'd like to see that for some balance. As for Jerry, his wife & son should both disown him.

The conversation between the Tommy & his Dad was too funny, measuring his life expectancy & the Red Sox.

Re: Great Show | ||

Is Leary actively, actually TRYING to make firemen look bad? Now the chief is STEALING? Sure, he gave it back, but he took it in the first place.
And are we supposed to identify with Tommy WHY, exactly? Like I WANT to beat up an ex-wife's boyfriend and burn his face with my stove and actually do it, then use my family police connections to throw him in jail. Now he almost burns a man alive, as well as burn a building. What is he, a fireman from Fahrenheit 451? Why am I watching? I keep hoping they'll actually show something good about firemen. Apparently, in Leary's world, all firemen are oversexed adulterous satyrs, no matter what age or what shape they're in. Leary, if you consider yourself a friend to firemen, this isn't the way to do it. |

Re: Great Show | ||

I don't really see that this show portrays firemen horribly at all. I see a pretty tortured guy who took a dangerous job because he is a very edgy guy who thrives on the excitement of his job, but also views it as a calling and who truly cares about the people whose lives he touches.
Sure it's over the top, but most dramas are. ER shows its doctors as drug addicts etc. The thing about Tommy is that he really lives for the moment. He doesn't think about the consequences of his actions and he is very self-centered, he guages everything by how it affects him. But then we see these flashes of conscience, we see how deeply he is affected by his job, by the loss of his best friend and cousin, how much he cares about his kids. I love this character, how he truly fights change so hard. That said, I am sick that I missed it tonight. Update Fuzzy? |

Quote: Yeah...I finally hit that point last night with the conversation about the new woman firefighter's "nipples like top hats when aroused." And SHE said this because, y'know, to be a good firefighter women have to lower themselves to the level of the 12 year old boys who populate the department. This show started off so well but really tanked. We've all been dropped into Denis Leary's sickening adolescent fantasy of being a firefighter. For someone so concerned about "the "heros of 911", he certainly isn't doing them any justice. I'm all done with this crapfest. |

Re: Great Show | ||

I don't remember exact sequence so I'll go by character.
Franco & Sean have dates w/twins as a result of their calendar. They confuse their names and the twins walk away from them. Kenny gets a call from Sandra The new firefighter (forget her name) demands changing area/bathroom from chief. Threatens to sue if she doesn't get it & brings up chief's past record. She freezes on the first fire (dropping stuff, etc.) The rest of the crew is understandably upset. Chief lectures her about a woman he knew who sued to get in the FDNY, then wrote a commentary about how there was a lack of female names among the dead firefighters (commentary was based on IRL story). Registers his anger that the author didn't consider families of the dead in her commentary. Newbie redeems herself by rescuing teenage kid & pre-op trans boyfriend out of tree (tree incident really happened a few months back). Psycho Andrew shows up trying to make amends w/New Mike after Geneva left Pscyho Andrew. Since New Mike is homeless, he agrees to stay w/Andrew for some weird reason. They drink & watch Mickey Mantle's bio on tv while Psycho Andrew smokes something in a pipe (I'm guessing he borrowed from the writers' crack stash). Psycho Andrew then tries to rape New Mike again, but since he's not restrained, he grabs the bat & beats up Psycho Andrew & leaves Tommy gets a ticket from a NYPD officer who complains the FDNY gets all the 9/11 attention. Tommy promises to beat him at the NYPD/FDNY hockey game. Janet shows up saying the mortgage & car payments bounced and demands $4,000 immediately. Whinges that she can't work because then they'll have to get a housekeeper/nanny and pay them. Yeah, like Tommy's working prevents him from oh, fixing the plumbing and everything else she asks him to do Tommy tries to get in on various jobs (garage building, etc.) to get money. He has a hotel rendez vous w/Shelia (& asks his brother to arrange to comp it). Has another amusing closed caption convo w/Dad where he asks for a basement fridge for shooters. Uncle Teddy shows up w/a bag of cash because he lost his house in Atlantic City. Uncle T tries to kill himself in Tommy's car. Tommy saves him. Uncle T goes to the track & wins big. Tommy brings money Uncle T gives to him & he showers it on Janet. He calls Colleen's girlfriend & pretends to be a boy from her class to get by her mom, then makes a case for reconciliation. |

The writing is excellent and the acting superb. Leary has always had the utmost respect for firefighters, but take a group of them to see this new Travola flick Ladder 49 and sit with them and watch Rescue Me... they'll tell you which is the more accurate depitcion of them every time and it ain't the Travolta schmultz.
I've only seen the first epsiode. According to Showcase.ca episode 2 is Wednesday night (the 6th) at 10. My favourite line from the first episode was the young guy talking about this date with the chick with sideburns. Leary's character asks him about being deseprate to get laid and he says "It's not the same man. After 9-11 I used to get all kinds of pussy but people forget." Funny shit. |

And I take it you've done this thing. Yes, very accurate to have a female firefighter talk about her nipples rising like tophats. Very respectful to show ALL firefighters, bar none, as being oversexed horndogs and adulterers. On the side, great moral tone, realistic or not, to show a catholic priest openly breaking his vows and being nonchalant about it. That's why I've stopped watching. |

Ya, you're right. It's all too real. What was I thinking?
By the way, actually KNOW any firefighters? They are horn dogs. Every single last one of them. Thank god for that! |

Re: great show | ||

Denis Leary has fallen in love with himself -- this show went from being a great show to a ridiculous caricature of how he wishes he could be as a firefighter. He tried the same schtick as a cop but thankfully that show got cancelled. I used to be a fan of Leary, but this show might have just about killed that.
And by the way, I know plenty of firefighters and they are not like EVERY SINGLE "horndog" character on Leary's new show. Thank God for that. |

Re: great show | ||

You both have your heads up your asses.
Does every show about someone in the emergency field have to hold them up to some demi-god status? Like a firefighter is incapable of doing any wrong. They don't have affairs and talk ill of women or have drinking problems? They aren't misogynists or racists? C'mon! Just because they do what they do for a living doesn't make them infallible. Oh yeah, and while we're at it, some Priests rape and some teachers download porn and some doctors cheat on their taxes. I'm less concerned with YOU being offended by what's in the show and more concerned if it offends any of my firefighter friends, and for what it's worth, they think the show's hilarious. You might also want to know this. From Leary's bio at IMDB.com "Founded the Leary Firefighters' Foundation charity in response to the Dec. 3, 1999 warehouse fire that killed six firefighters in his hometown of Worcester, MA. His cousin Jeremiah Lucey was among the six heroic firefighters killed. Leary also established a second division of LFFF, the Leary Firefighters' Foundation Fund for New York's Finest in response to the FDNY's losses in the Sept. 11th attacks." So I think Mr. Leary has spent a little more time around a fire house than either of you. Please, do us all a favour and go watch some happy, feel-good television. |

your head up your ass | ||

Yes, I knew that Leary had done that. And you're right, firefighters are human, and SOME of them are undoubtedly what you say they all are. The operative word is some. You sound like the kind of person that would tar a whole class os people with the same sad stereotypical brush. Are you twelve?

But if you agree that 'some' are fallible than why are you so damned offended?
Don't like it? Don't watch it. No one is making you. |

He has pretty shoulders too. |

Don't be obtuse. You previously made statements that implied that they are ALL like that, hence my reference to your stereotyping. Your sig probably is an indication of your mental if not actual age.
I no longer watch. I just check the logs. It's the only way to voice your protest, by not giving them your patronage, and by making your opinion known. Watch what you will, but don't defend this as more than it is by slandering a whole class of people who do what neither you or I can't. |

Re: re: great show | ||

So do you think Franco is punching Tommy out for being dangerous at a fire or widow banging?
|
|||
OriginalEndora |
Re: re: great show | ||
|
It could be either, but my guess would be Franco's punching him for endangering himself like that. Plus his risk taking could endanger the rest of the crew if they have to go in after him to rescue him. And that would be time/effort diverted from the rescue at hand.
