I watched the "Investigative Reports" series on A&E last night & it was a 2 hour show on polygamy.....(jumping on the bandwagon!) It reminded me of Roman & Nicki's relationship. They focused on the Kingston Family, very secretative & reportedly 1,500 members strong. Inbreeding has watered down the family blood; no mention of father/daughter stuff but definitely uncle/niece. |

I suspect part of her problem is her mother was Roman's first wife and therefore held a position of authority. Nikki probably was somewhat privileged within the compound because of her parents...now she's wife #2 and is isolated from the compound. She copes with it by shopping, inwardly hating Bar and sniping at Margene.

I agree too. Nikki wants the power of a number one wife. She knows she cannot outright defy Barb but she tries to push her dominance over Margie so that she knows there is a pecking order. I love the way she calls Barb boss lady.
I wonder if she knows she is the least favorite wife, that is why she compensates by shopping. I feel she wants to be the one who has the nicest stuff of the three. |

I see Margene and the oldest son's flirting as a sign that there may be more to that relationship down the line. How old is Margene? She's definately closer in age to the son than she is to Bill.

Interesting concept. Interesting family values.
I like the concept of Bill being cast out and rebuilding his life in suburbia. Like the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" concept in the culture, even if it's been outlawed, many of their forebears lived the life. Liked the daughter and her friend discussing these issues rather obliquely. And even though she (and her mom, Barb) do not wholeheartly support polygamy, I have a bad feeling about the future, especially if Roman takes a fancy to her....... |

Ratings went down big on second show.
I'm only giving it a few more episodes, its a boring soap opera. We got real polygamists in Arizona, and they are monsters, essentially enslaving the women, casting away the boys, and sucking down every last dollar they can off of welfare. This show is about as close to reality as Willy Wonka is to a modern factory. |

It's still an HBO show, which means that the acting and writing are better than anything not on HBO.
But yeah, it's not my favorite. Rome, Sopranos and Entourage are my holy trinity. |

The Wire is a better show, but it has dismal ratings, is more expensive to film, and they keep bringing it back.

This episode was weaker than the last, IMO, but I'm still interested to know more. Like how did Bill end up back at the compound to ask Roman for the money/loan for the store? And was that about the time he married Roman's daughter as wife #2? Was that a term of the loan? Does Nikki know?
There's a LOT more backstory I still want to see. |
