On a different note, I thought this was interesting: Quote: Especially given the scheduling delays, these have got to be some of the most highly compensated reality show losers to date. With EPM and Katz getting into the boxing promotion biz afterwards, it should be interesting to see what form EPM/Katz style promotion - and boxing, itself - takes. |

NBC bills The Contender as "the next great human drama," but the reality boxing series premiering next month already has more drama than it bargained for.
One of its 16 contestants, Najai "Nitro" Turpin, 23, committed suicide at 4 a.m. ET Monday. Turpin shot himself in the head while sitting with his girlfriend in a parked car outside the West Philadelphia gym where he trained, police told the Associated Press. Investigators were unsure why Turpin took his life. The latest from producer Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice), the series starts March 7 (8:30 p.m. ET/PT) and will run as planned. The Contender completed taping last fall except for the finale, a live prize bout scheduled for May. Turpin was eliminated earlier in the competition, which pits two boxers in each episode and allows the winner to advance. The episode that features Turpin will be dedicated to him and will solicit donations to a trust fund to benefit his family. NBC promotional materials say Turpin was orphaned at 18 when his mother died. He cared for a younger brother, sister, niece and nephew while holding down jobs doing road work and cleaning seafood. He also left a 2-year-old daughter along with his girlfriend, who appears in the show. The show could get a ratings boost from viewers curious to glean signs of strife, potentially giving it a better chance of success than Fox's copycat The Next Great Champ, which premiered last fall and quickly failed. Sugar Ray Leonard, the retired champion who co-hosts The Contender with Sylvester Stallone, says he was "devastated to hear the news." "Najai was a very soft-spoken young man; everyone fell in love with him, with his personality, with his way of doing things," Leonard says. "He had a great deal of natural ability, and he was extremely confident." Leonard says he saw no sign of inner turmoil and described the prime-time exposure as "an awesome opportunity" that would have boosted Turpin's career. But Turpin's manager, Percy Custus, told the Philadelphia Daily News that among other troubles, Turpin was "frustrated" by a Contender contract that paid him $1,800 a week but prevented him from appearing in a boxing match until the series ends in May. "His death comes as a shock to all of us," Burnett said in a statement. The episode that features his bout "will stand as a wonderful testament to who he was," but it "will not be changed." Although The Contender initially was conceived as an outlet for inexperienced but promising fighters, Turpin, as did other contestants, already had an established record. He turned pro in 2001 and fought mainly in his hometown of Philadelphia. His record before appearing in the show was 11-1, including eight knockouts. |

Burnett loves it when his contestants meet with death.
EPMB will probably do a photo montage at the end of Najai's ep, with the music from when Jenna Morasca's mom died. |

I just thought there would be alot of backlash about this. There are so many critics of reality tv already you would think this would just give then one more thing to complain about. If this was somebody on Survivor or Apprentice it would be a really big deal and probably would change the landscape of reality tv. But because it's a lesser known show not so much.

Why would there be backlash if his suicide wasn't related to the show?

I wasn't planning to watch this.. then immediately after reading about this I had three thoughts.
1. Paranoid ramblings including but not limited to Vincent Foster's suicide and was Hiliary Clinton behind it? 2. Is Mark Burnett capable of murder? 3. I thought these people were psychologically tested? Does anyone remember that famous incident when the Prober said to Heidi "you scored the highest on the test" or something of that ilk. Clearly that test.. NOT GOOD. |

Re: The Contender | ||
Quote: I read an interview with one of his trainer's that impilies that it is partially the show's fault. They filmed it May of last year and due to the contract they signed they are not allowed to box at all professionally until the show airs. The trainer bascially said the guy had nothing to do but sit around and wait and couldn't earn a living. |

Re: The Contender | ||

Well that test was WRONG as well...
But I do believe I read MB does "test" for psychological abilities to handle pressure, etc.. although that source was also I believe "The E True Hollywood Story..." so take that what its worth. Yet in all seriousness, this show has been in the can for months, delayed and re-cut to focus on the women in a ruse to attract women to the show and if in fact this man was prohibited from working the stress of that alone is prohibitive. In addition.. does the name Mike Tyson ring any bells? This is not a profession that always appeals to the highest of emotional and intellectual folk. But I haven't a doubt in my mind the premiere of this will be THROUGH THE ROOF!!!! and then well no pun intended - die a slow death. |

Quote:Since he was getting between $6,000-$7,200 per month (that's $72,000-$86,400 for the year), I don't know how much earning a living he needed to do. He shouldn't have been sitting and waiting, he should have been training and working. Just because you aren't fighting professionally doesn't mean you don't have anything to do with yourself. The guy had problems that were completely unrelated to the show. He may have been frustrated he couldn't box professionally, but he was also highly compensated for his time and patience. I mean, he turned pro in 2001 and had 12 professional fights in somewhere around 42 months. That's about three a year. Do you really think the loss of about three professional fights, while being highly and regularly compensated, would lead to this? I don't. I feel bad for the guy, because obviously he had issues that we don't know about. But unless he was in serious financial trouble before the program began or he wasted his money this whole time, money was not a concern. |

Quote: I was simply refrencing what one of his trainer's said. But how did you come up with the calculations of his income? I'm sure as you are that there are other factors that were involved in his suicide, but a boxer and his money are soon parted. Ask Tyson. |

Re: The Contender | ||

The same stories that quoted the trainer also mention that they are being paid a stipend of $1500 to $1800 a week until the season's conclusion. For guys of modest means who weren't making their living fighting before the show, this seems plenty of compensation for continuing not to make your living fighting.
