Pre-tax or not, that was what they were making. Who knows what it was termed as, or how much it was taxed. Was it "income" or a "stipend" or a "sponsorship?" Let's just assume for the sake of argument he had 30 percent taken out of his paycheck -- and he takes home around $50,000.
as for this: Quote:That is just plain ignorance/stupidity. Mike Tyson is one boxer who was irresponsible with his money. There are tons more who were not. I mean, ask Max Schmeling. There are people who are good with money and those who are bad. I dont know where this guy fell, but it still doesnt really matter. He didnt commit suicide because he was having trouble earning an income. That much is clear. |

Shall I ask Jack Johnson? How 'bout Buster Douglas? The bottom line is that it is, and always will be, all conjecture. That is one of the points of posting on this site.

The one who invented and patented the wrench while in prision for the illegal act of taking his white fiancee across state lines? The one who challenged societal norms and forced racist whites to acknowledge him? Yeah. Great example. |

I just read this on MSNBC and I thought I would post it for those interested.

mb is explaining it on cnbc, he said he will make the show a tribute to the guy who killed himself, an get people to contribute his 2 year old daughter. he also said the last 2 weeks of filming the boxer left and then came back.

Sugar Ray and Sly served as pallbearers.
I'm not sure what to think of that. |

Hey gaelgirl: It seems you want to spar with me. The topic you have contention with me about is boxer's wasting their earned money. So I pointed out Tyson, you ignored Buster Douglas and eventhough he did die broke, you want to make an exception out of Jack Johnson. So I see your Jack Johnson, and raise you a Leon Spinks. And don't even mention George Foreman who has made the bulk of his wealth off the grill and not the ring.

Re: The Contender | ||

I just watched an interview with Mark Burnett on Topic A with Tina Brown.. he commented about what he knew with regards to the suicide.
Apparently there was a personal domestic problem with regards to his baby mama and he left the training camp. He had expressed regrets that they weren't together but was devoted to his 2 year old. That said, he wasn't informed to the particulars but alluded to the fact that it was in relation to those issues. In the interview MB is asked about other reality shows, such as American Idol and how they seem to thrive on humiliating the participants. And I quote him verbatim here.. I Quote: Well I always thought the limey bastard was a dulusional manipulative fuck but this seems to prove it. Given the fact that two of his "aspirational" shows are fucking FICTIONAL characters. Rocky and Robinson Crusoe? David Caruso maybe... but Rocky? Give me a fucking break. And we all know what happened to the former lead singer of Inxs. Perhaps that will be a challenge... how to perform auto eroticism without killing yourself. He also acknowledged that this show was about Boxers and that they come from "less than advantaged situations" and as a result may have more volatile problems facing them than those who are attracted to other reality shows. Nice to know that his subtle racisim and sexism has a tone of elitist classism as well. But there is apparently a foundation set up for this boxer's daughter to help her (again I quote) to remove her from her current "less than advantaged situation" that she is in. |

Quote: Then what the hell is American Idol? I'm sure he feels his show is different since he'll pick 16 contestants to live in a house as they are eliminated one by one. |

The Contender got a fantastic review in the San Francisco Chronicle today. This is fairly rare for the Chron TV guy, who generally dislikes reality television (although he does generally enjoy Mark Burnett stuff). Here's the review:

I got really excited when I heard Hans Zimmer is doing the music for the show. I thought that the music I heard during the promos sounded like Pirates of the Carribean, and then I read that it was indeed Hans Zimmer compising the music. Hans Zimmer is awesome.

Well out of all reality shows this one is getting by far the most promotion. You can't go two minutes without seeing the commercials or seeing Sly on some talk show. Im gonna give it a chance tonight just cause it's a Burnett show. But I really don't have high hopes. That Next Great Champ disaster makes me think that boxing just doesn't blend with reality television.

It seems like it'll be great. Truthfully, the intro was pretty near, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the episode. Burnett hasn't done us wrong so far.
