I think the show was losing a little of its steam. It was based on the life of a town that was vibrant and interesting for only a short while, how long could it last? Would it turn into Mash, consistently high quality, but predictable and repetitive, and lasting longer than the historical event it was based upon?
The ending of the third season was dissapointing. Oooh, there could be fireworks...nope. And the new characters weren't making up for the ones we'd lost. I thought Brian Cox looked out of place on the show. Alma Garrett left. Doc Cochran was dying. Ellsworth was dead. The African American General was gone. Seth Bullock was seething every week, but he wan't going to do anything, it seems.
Yes, I miss the show greatly, and I would have watched it if it had gone on another 10 seasons. But it left on top. I doubt there will ever be writing like that again.
