If TP had indeed gone on for years, I don't think I would have been such a fan of it. For me, Cooper was always the central character. Sure all the weirdness in the townsfolk existed before he came, but he was what brought it out of the woods, so to speak. But after the solving of Laura's murder, there really wasn't much reason for him to stay in town. Sooner or later, he has to leave - and then TP becomes a soap opera about a small town.
