Meh.
Is anyone else incredibly underwhelmed by all the contestants this season? Rory looks to be their golden girl, because they didn't at all mention her total fuck-up on the demo, but kissed her ass as the "Comeback Queen." The only thing I can say they did right is that they booted the right person. Who seriously cooks in a business suit and heels? Totally wasn't going to work out. |

And who bakes Jamacan chicken without using curry?

Quote:You're not mentioning the nose piercing? The Food Network general audience does not want to be thinking about nose-piercing snot issues. Or anything related to the all-around lack of judgment re getting a nose piercing and trying to be a food host on TV. Eeeeeesh--good riddance. |

Quote: Yeah, I was rooting more for Reggie (?) last year. Now I like Guy quite a bit, but last year that "off the hook" was, well OTT. I think one of the judges did finally tell him to tone that down, if I remember correctly. And, Vincent? With that "gets me off" action? OMG grossed me out instantly. Dude, you're old and it's not the 80's anymore. Eeeeeesh. I only watched last night with 1/2 attention. I'm fine with Nikki going - she was so tightly wound that she was uncomfortable to watch. The idea of her making any sort of Jamaican dish (Jamaica = laid back, Irie, etc) was sorta funny to me. Salmon continues to skeeve me out. Rory seems very nice, but a big YES to the scarey gums comment. |

This show is trying way too hard to be Top Chef.
I think it is kind of sad that Food Network has such a closed view of who can be a food network star. They've already eliminated three people who would bring a little diversity (demographically and cuisine-wise) and have kept on weaker cooks like Rory and Tommy or whoever who seem to me to be Emeril-lite and Rachael-lite. Oh and I love Giada. |

Diversity?
The Food folk were getting a definate bipolar "Omerosa" type vibe from her. They decided to eliminate her before she snappped, wanting to avoid lawsuits, Al Shaprton, etc. |

Quote: Me and everybody else, if we're making jerk chicken. Two completely different concepts I'm assuming from the judge's comments last night, she was missing the scotch bonnets, which would make sense, since I'm sure we would have seen her dealing with them as part of her preparation process |

Quote: Exactly. Asking about curry for a jerk recipe is like asking why someone didn't use BBQ sauce to make buffalo wings. I didn't think Nikki, though cute, made for a TV foodie personality. That said, I think the winner of this show will be whichever contestant acts most like the existing Food Network personalities. Normally, I'd be mad about the fact that just about all the Food Network chefs are white (and many of them bland and boring), but I only watch BAREFOOT CONTESSA and PAULA'S HOME COOKING (besides this show). |

Re: The Next Food Network Star 3 | ||

As for diversity, Food Network has a handful of African-American hosts (Al Roker, Bobby Rivers, Sandra Pinckney, and Warren Brown); the extent to which their shows are popular depends on--surprise!--whether anyone in the home audience likes watching them.
The only one of the above I watch is Warren's "Sugar Rush"--and I don't even like sugar. (Other than making ice cream once a month, I never make or serve dessert at home, mostly because Mr. Veil is constantly on a diet.) I watch Warren because he's smart, has an attractive personality (not to mention he's pretty easy on the eyes), and actually teaches me something about food. I also watch Alton Brown and Iron Chef America for those same reasons (and, boy, do I wish they would publish the Iron Chef America recipes). There's a whole bunch of white female hosts I don't watch (even some who are excellent cooks) because I just don't enjoy their personalities. And some audience member who enjoys Screechel and Sandra (*hic!*) Lee probably isn't going to watch Warren. Food Network didn't need Nikki--she didn't "bring anything to the party" (as Alton would say). I was hoping for Vivienne to stay, but her English was so deficient I quickly realized she was doomed. I'm actually starting to like Jag, so maybe there will finally be a Latin host. |

Quote:Well I'm a little crooked but I definitely thought that Vivien was a beautiful Brazillian babe!! Would have liked to see her another week!! But the closest to male eye candy (being Adrien - even though he's carrying some serious luggage most of the time) doesn't seem like he has it to make it that far. What he made did look like something threw up into a pepper and knocked it over. He was about to pass out waiting to find out if he was getting the boot!! But I knew that tight-mouthed wound up bitch Nikki was getting the axe. She had the look (i.e. nose ring) of being wild but she has the personality of a dead fish! |
