Re: Extras - New Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant Show | ||
|
I just saw the first episode. It's really good, but don't expect The Office. It's a tad darker, and Ricky's character is not as dumb as David Brent. I'm not a big fan of Ben Stiller, but he really put out for this show. He's playing himself and is a complete jerk. The final scene of the show is truly cringe worthy. If you like The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm, you'll like this.

It will be hard for me not to compare it to The Office, but I'm definitely going to give it a shot simply because it is Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant

Plus it's going to be paired with Curb. Brilliant move.
Hope we get it here :( |

How do you think I watched it?

I assumed you were in the UK or something.
Anyway, finished watching it and agree with your comments. I've already read people saying they hate it and that it sucks compared to the office, but you can't really judge it after just the pilot episode. There's definitely a Seinfeld influence there with the conversations and elaine-jerry dynamic of Andy and Maggie. And yeah Ben Stiller was pretty good. Hopefully future episodes will give Gervais' character more of a personality or backstory/more screen time. |

OK, I've finally seen episodes 2 and 3. Two was not that great, mainly because I didn't know who the "famous" people were in it, so alot of the references went over my head.
Three was the best yet. Kate Winslet was gold. Her character was nice with the extras, but as shallow as Andy. She gives a few lines that are classic cringeworthy lines. This ep had me wailing with laughter and blushing, hiding, cringing, sweating. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. It's amazing how he can get big stars to make their real personas look so bad. |

OK, I've seen all six episodes and this show is gold. Episode 4 is the Samuel L Jackson episode. He does nothing embarrasing, and overall it above average. The 5th ep is about Les Dennis. I would not have known who he was if I didn't watch Celebrity Big Brother UK. It is merciless on the poor guy. He is raked over the coals like no other. Very good. The 6th ep is Patrick Stewart and it's brilliant. It has one line "Aids" that had me laughing for two minutes straight. I had to pause it to compose myself. Patrick Stewart is great and I hope this show doesn't ruin his image.
Rating Episode 1 **** Episode 2 ***1/2 Episode 3 ***** Episode 4 **** Episode 5 ***** Episode 6 ***** Just as a primer for the Les Dennis episode, he was a standup comedian who became the host of Family Feud. He (fifties) married a twenty-nine year old Amanda Holden. ![]() She cheated on him with a guy from Men Behaving Badly. He took her back. He went on Celebrity Big Brother UK and during it she barely did anything to acknowledge his presence there and they filed for divorce a couple weeks after. He was very down in the house (finished second) and became sort of a whipping boy in the press. He's now doing a lot of panto (broad British theatre). |

I'm not sure if I love this show yet, but Kate Winslet is brilliant! "Put his Willie Wonka in your Oompa Loompa."

I guess they're airing them out of order in the US.
I thought it got better as it went along, so obviously that won't apply to the US airings now. The only episode I didn't think was that good was the Ross Kemp one. The rest were all great, especially the finale. |

Re: Extras | ||

I managed to stick it out through the whole thing, but had to turn on the closed-captioning after the first 2 or 3 minutes so I could understand what the fuck they were saying.
It was alright, but from the posts above, it sounds like some of the other eppys won't be so great. I'll see how far I can stick with it. |

I don't know if you liked The Office or not, but if so, it's definitely worth watching.
There's only 6 episodes, so it's not a huge commitment. |

I thought it was very funny. We LOVED The Office with every fiber of our being, and Ricky Gervais is right up there as a comedic actor imho.
I was glad to see that he brought some of his David Brent cringworthy-ness into this episode. The scene with the priest while wearing a Saturday Night Fever suit was freaking hysterical! "Father Michael...O'...Flately..." LOL I put the closed captioning on too. Me and Pappy are old, ya know. |

This show was frickin' hilarious!!!! I love that this show is so un-PC, with all the jokes about the girl with CP... "It must be nice to hear her laugh..."
Kate Winslet was terrific. And what a good sport she is to take on this show. "You want an Oscar? Play a mental." And giving phone sex advice? "I'm fudding myself stupid..." Pure comedy gold. I think I'm in love with Ricky Gervais. |

EXTRAS is wonderful! -- loved the scene with Ricky Gervais in the office of his "agent" played by (co-writer/co-director) Stephen Merchant. SM gets a cell call and spends such a long time trying to get the over-the-ear piece on under his glasses that the caller hangs up. RG's about-to-erupt exasperation (eye rolls, sighs and sideways glances) is hilarious. Merchant says deadpan: that happens every time.
I've watched several of the repeated showings--and catch more of the funny each time, such as the line: "is she pissed (drunk) or is she mental"? when he sees the sister with CP walking toward them-- Love his comments when his roomy wants to fix him up with someone who is depressed-- "WHAT! why would you want to fix me up with a psychotic who forgets to take her lithium and then ... (something about doing him bodily harm...) edited to fix typos |

This show is sooo wrong. I love it!
"Who's yellow?" The Ben Stiller appearance is a bit of a stretch but I like how he, like Kate Winslet, are unrepentant asshole egos. "Will you stop going on about fucking dead wife!" Bye nerd! Between the big-shoe guy, and the stutterer and the wheelchair guy on Curb Your Enthusiasm, this was not a good week to have a disability on HBO! |

Ben: "Do you know who I am?"
Ricky: "Starsky or Hutch. I never can keep it straight." Ben: "Is that supposed to be funny?" Ricky: "I don't know, you were in it." very funny stuff |
