I think the new guy was briefly introduced to throw the viewer off. Now that Jim and Pam are engaged, I can't imagine anything really getting in their way. Conflict, sure. But this new guy won't be a long term issue.

I agree. I think Pam's new "friend" scenes were there to create a sense of urgency in us viewers as we watched. It was intended for us to want to smack Jim and wake him up to make him propose sooner rather than later. Jim then obviously felt the urgency with going so many days (10+ I think) without seeing Pam in person, his call to her and her cutting the convo short, saying "I have friends," all leading to him calling her to meet for lunch at the rest stop so he could propose. All of this culminating in the rainy, impromptu proposal is what made the proposal great for me, a viewer who likes Pam & Jim together and just loves The Office.

Interesting fact about Creed, which I don't know if it was brought up here, is that he was in the band the Grass Roots, who had some hits in the 60's. Most people would know their hit Let's Live For Today. Full of surprises, just like his character.

That was mentioned on the Booze Cruise episode, although I think that was part of the deleted scenes, where Creed gets all badass on the guitar (Michael gets jealous), and then he has a talking head where he explains that he was in the Grass Roots. Creed's character and the real Creed often crossover, that's what makes him so funny. Half the stuff his character says you don't know if that's a genuine fact from his life.

Add to that the scene in the episode with the obscene watermark (I'm pretty sure it was this ep) where the local reporter corners Creed in the kitchen and asks him "Aren't you Creed Bratton from Grass Roots?" And tells Creed he wrote his obituary and then Creed does a talking head where he states he faked his own death for tax purposes and is collecting benefits as his own widow or something to that effect.

Creed is my fave of the background characters or 2nd tier or whatever you want to call them. Though Holly is quickly rising the ranks.
