Posts: 34807 (11/16/06 11:52 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	As much as I'm one of the biggest Kate Winslet fans on the planet, Helen Mirren is so fierce in The Queen, and she's so deserving of awards for years of excellent work, that it would be robbery if she didnt get it. I loved Forrest Whittaker in Last King of Scotland, but I'm sorry, Leo was incredible in the Departed. Unless this alledged great performance by Peter O'Toole knocks my socks off, this has to be Leo's year. I love that the Golden Globe category for Best comedy or Musical will probably include Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine, Cars and Borat!

He and Matt Damon were fantastic in a film that was often uneven. But Leo played the kind of role the Academy loves -- the conflicted cop (remember Benicio del Toro in Traffic?). I have always thought that diCaprio was a great actor. I loved him in Gilbert Grape, I thought he was extremely charming in Titanic and Catch Me If You Can, but The Departed put him on a whole new level. And sorry, it's just wrong if he wins Best Supporting Actor for The Departed. He was the heart of the movie.

I haven't seen the Forest Whitaker movie yet, but I simply loved Leo in The Departed. When the abrupt ending of his character came I was legitimately sad...over a movie character. Besides, Leo is more of a "star" so I wouldn't be surprised if he picks up enough votes to win over that alone. Although I guess that more applies to the Actress categories. Still, Leo has been nominated so many times and is in so many consistently amazing movies. He deserves it.

I think it's a testament to Leo's amazing performance that I loathed the Matt Damon character so much. I think the original point of the movie was so we could empathize with both Billy and Colin, but Leo made Billy such a complex, real character that Matt Damon seemed like a cold soulless executioner next to Leo. (Raises tiny voice): I thought Mirren was amazing in The Queen, but I didn't really enjoy the movie itself all that much ...

The studio put out an ad for the movie that didn't have him listed in supporting, so they might have changed their minds and are pushing him in lead. If that's the case, he'll probably get nominated (Blood Diamond doesn't have much buzz, and it looks horrible). But I don't think he'll win. If O'Toole shockingly doesn't get it, most of the buzz I've heard is pointing at Will Smith as the next closest competitor, as lousy as his movie looks. Personally, I'm hoping for a Ryan Gosling nom. *Quote:* ELLEN PAGE DAMMIT!! Sorry, but there's no way. Cross your fingers for an ISA nomination.

A cold executioner, never broke a sweat, ever. Sorry, I like both Matt and Leo but Leo deserves it more. And plus, Matt already has an Oscar for the (overrated) Good Will Hunting.

After that movie people actually thought he was mentally retarded, that's how convincing he was. I remember Peter O'Toole being pissed that he got the Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. He thought that meant he was getting the "we'll give you something before you die" award and he said he wasnt done making movies.

The Academy is going to have its own version of Sophie's Choice this year - the old man who's been nominated a million times and never won, vs. the guy playing the devoted homeless father in the schmaltzy "inspirational" movie. As far as Leo goes, if Blood Diamond doesn't get him the buzz he wants, then the studio that produced The Departed will push him as the lead. I actually don't think he'll get nominated in supporting, even if the studio does push him for it. Sort of like Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was pushed for supporting for Whale Rider, but got a leading actress nomination anyway.
