I am curious as to what Matt's court date was all about.
Hansen brothers rock. Sig has never had a bad season it seems.

Blake is such a twit. Hubby and I both knew there was going tobe an issue with his quota as soon as he made the decision to dump all the extra crab. Either he can't add or his crew can't count.

I think Matt has to go to court about something alcohol related - They've gone on about him not drinking anymore, how much of a problem it was. So I think maybe it was a driving while intoxicated thing or something.
Hey, and for all you sig fans, go to Youtube and check out the interviews of Sig and Edgar on Leno, Daily Show and other places. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuhgIXKOy_w www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJtVV2765bU www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WAAbxGpGGw |

Did they leave in time for Matt to make the court date in time? I missed the end. I got to wondering...if the capt'n decided to continue crabbing rather than return, could he have been held in contempt of court?

Yes, they got back in time for Matt to fly to Seattle to make his court date. He ended up serving 30 days instead of 8 months. Nothing said for what, though.
I don't think it would have been Sig's fault if Matt missed his court date. Its Matt's responsibility. He knew when his court date was, he could have just found some piddly job in Seattle or what instead of crabbing. He's experienced, he knows the crab season can drag on if catches are bad - he was gambling on Sig being a good captain and getting them in on time. Of course, Sig also had the pressure of getting them in on time as they would have been paid less for their crab if they got in later. |

I think tonights episode was new. I LOVE this show. I have no reason to love it but its on my tivo and I enjoy every episode. I even enjoy the slightly lame "After the Catch".
Tonight when the Time Bandit was going through the heavy ice was anxiety provoking. And on "After the Catch" the one one captain talking about how the show gets him in the girls pants made me chuckle. |

Thought it was since they gave the amounts every one was paid. $50k on some boats. Nice.

Love this show. Sad another season is over, glad everyone came home safe and sound though. One of my fav's in last nights show: Josh, of all people, beating out Dad and Jake on hauling/coiling the pot ropes in. Classic, just absofrigginlutely classic. The ice was skeery, man that had to be some stressful time on that boat. Felt bad for the crew guys who had to sit down below on 'leak lookout', you gotta know if a hole blows open you're most likely the 1st to die. The one thing I didn't get though, when they were in that area with the ice so bad they were concerned it may puncture a hole in the hull, why weren't they in their water suits just in case?

I love this show. I drive my hubby crazy watching it. But, hell he watches poker all the time.
I like to watch Sig and Phil. But, if I had to deal with one of the captains it would be Greg. I watched the past few episodes to see how bad that greenhorn would freak out. Whne they do stuff like that how much do they end up getting paid. The guy only did about a day and a half's work. |

Considering all the superstitions these guys have, I'd imagine putting on the suits would be real bad luck. It would be like inviting something to happen.

Jet, you may have a point there, hadn't thought about that aspect.

Savanah - I would bet that the captains do a pro-rated pay cut for those guys who quit during the trip and don't work the entire time on the boat.

I'm thinking the greenhorns may start out with some kind of flat fee they get paid...and then if they work out and work their way up they start getting full share.
But I could be wrong. |

Still love the show, but it wasn't the same without my dear Nyhammer. *le sigh*

I think they definately don't get a full share, well at least Rick's kids didn't get full share their first trips out. One of the "surprises" he gave Jake on his second trip was informing him that he was moving up to a full deck hand & would receive a full share for that trip. Either way, if they have a good trip like they did with this last one, I would imagine even the greenhorns take home would be equivalent to a years salary at most jobs in their area.

Derby fishing vs ? | ||
|
Just catching up with season 1. Can someone explain what derby fishing is versus non derby fishing? And why did the change force small boats out.

Re: Derby fishing vs ? | ||

Derbies are basically fish all you can catch for three weeks or whatever. No limits.
Now they do it by quotas so the crab population doesn't die out. I think they bid for contracts that allow you to fish a specific amount of crab. |

Love this show.
The scene where one of the crew had to go fix the crane when they were trying to stack the pots. Crazy. He was all the way at the top trying to get out some little bolt or screw and the boat was rocking. He was basically hanging over the edge of the boat. The greenhorn was holding onto the pots for dear life as the boat rolled and the deck hand fixing the crane was acting like it just another day in his garage working on his car. I think you have to be a little crazy to do that job. The average sane person would look at you like had three heads if you told them to climb up the crane and fix it. |

Re: Derby fishing vs ? | ||

More detail on derby:
They set an overall quota X million punds for the entire fleet. Each boat would go out and catch as many crab as it could in the short season. Now, each boat has its own assigned quota, instead of an overall quota for the entire fleet. Boats can buy other boats' quotas. |
