Sally Field was amazing as was Calista.
My only problem was they had too much brothers. The druggy & gay one were okay but the 3rd one was forgettable.

It had it's moments. I can't keep all the siblings and their spouses straight, and it wasn't exciting, but there were some good moments (death of the father, the scene between Sally and Calista)
I'm not sure what to think of the gay son - seems like they just wanted to include him, but don't know what to do with his character. Even the boring brother did more than he did. Hopefully he'll actually do something as the show continues. Really like the drugged up son, and I was surprised that Calista Flockhart didn't remind me of Ally McBeal at all. Of course, it's been a few years since I saw that show, but she seemed like a totally different character, which is good. |

I actually liked it.
The cast, as mentioned is stellar. I was sad to see Tom Skerrit die as I really like him (Where the FUCK is Picket Fences on DVD?) A Steel Magnolias reference would have been nice. I was shocked at how little Sally Field there was, but she was phenomenal in the scenes she appeared in. Cool to see the guy from Reunion get a gig. However, I think it was a mistake having him returned from Afghanistan. Had it been Iraq, it would have made for a far more powerful confrontation between Sally Field and Calista Flockhart. Afghanistan is a justified war, so it takes some of the power out of the scenario dramatically. I sort of have a feeling that this was part of the story they revamped. It's was great to see Ron Rifkin and Balthazar Getty. A little Alias reunion is fun. Rachel Griffiths is wonderful. I could just watch her in anything. So glad to see her get work. Waaaaay too much Calista. I understand that she is the nucleus from which we were introduced to the characters, but I was just sick of her story after a while. Also, it's gonna take some time to get used to her playing evil. The other brother was the most useless gay character since Matt on Melrose place. The storylines were pretty generic, but with this caliber of cast I think that it could really turn into something wonderful. Plus, there's nothing else on Sundays at 10 so what the hell. I'll stick with it. |

Quote: Wasn't she?! I'm already smelling Emmy...but she'll probably have to fight Calista and Rachel for it. I'd also have to assume that her role will only grow now that the father has passed. |

I thought it was good. I actually liked it better than the first episode of grey's when it first came on. Cast is great and it kinda has a mystery flavor of DH. Will watch for sure.

Rachel Griffiths just plain fucking rocks.
I'd watch her in anything, she's just that good. |

Quote: Ditto. Don't know what is it about her that she just suck you in. She has the same magnetism in SFU, too. Sally Field is great also. But Calista Flockhart... meh. |

I thought the show was excellent. I too was confused about the brothers. Couldn't keep track of which one I just saw and what his story was. Didn't help any that the phone rang, and that I got called out to pick up a kid.
I'm surprised to hear Skerrit's character dies. Right from the previews, Oh God, Dad, what have you done? I sensed he was going to die... but as soon as I saw it was Skerrit playing the role (didn't see him in a preview) I thought, well they won't kill HIM off! Rachel Griffiths was good. I've never seen her before. (If I saw her in the few episodes of 6 feet under that I watched, I don't remember). |

I'm on the fence about this one - love Rachel Griffiths and Sally Field, and Matthew Settle? Totally didn't know he was going to be in this, so that was a nice surprise. But, I guess I'd forgotten just how much I couldn't stand Calista Flockhart for me. She bugs so much that I kept flipping the channel to watch something else.

Did pretty good last night, scoring 16.1 million viewers.
Only troubling thing is it declined by about 2.75 million viewers at the 1/2-hour mark. But still great premiere numbers. |

I really liked it. The "special guest star" thing though was an annoying give-away that Tom wasn't going to make it past this epi.
Does Rachael Griffiths have some sort of clause in her contract that says the family patriarch must die in the first episode of the series? |

Re: Brothers & Sisters | ||

I liked mostly everything about the show - except for Calista Flockhart. Her extreme anorexic-like thinness is incredibly repulsive, as is her nose, which has gotten weirder looking as she gets older.
I'm reminded of "Ally McBeal": I basically liked everything about the show except for Flockhart. It's interesting how Portia DeRossi has now come clean about having a severe eating disorder at the time of her being on "Ally McBeal"; she attributes the disorder, in part, to the pressures of being around the other ultra, ultra thin actresses on the show. She doesn't name names, but it's quite obvious that at least one person to whom she is referring is Flockhart. |

I love Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths, but this showed just sucked ass.
Calista Flockhart was miscast. And her role is more like bullet points for a Republican fundraiser without anything to back it up. She just seemed out of her element and was due in part to her and in part to the writing. I felt like it was some Democrat writing for Republican without any real concept of the argument. And her boyfriend storyline added to the confusion. The character would be more interesting if she was more like Ann Coulter. Anyway, I'm not tapping it. It didn't grab me. I'll see it if I'm at home, bored, and there's nothing else to watch. |

I'm a bit surprised to see such positive reviews here.
I was bored until the last 10 minutes or so. The later scenes between Calista and Sally Field as well as the father's death may have saved the show for me. And Rachel Griffiths...she's awesome. But I agree that Calista was miscast completely. I almost wish they had switched her with Rachel Griffiths. I'll give it a second chance but I doubt I'll keep with it. The brothers were just dull. |
