Betty Buckley originally played the mother in the pilot, but they ditched her and reshot her scenes with Sally Field (who they believed would draw more viewers). Maybe they cut some of the mother's scenes rather than reshoot them all, which would explain Sally's short screen time. She'll undoubtedly appear in more scenes in future episodes.

Quote: Too late to switch now. But they can always shift focus to Sally Fields and Rachel Griffiths who are more loved and have much better acting chops than Calista. Just like they did to Rob Rowe and Charlie Sheen on TWW. |

I actually have to disagree and say I liked the casting of Flockhart, for some reason I did believe her as this passionate right-winger. I think she fits the part just fine.
Even more suprisingly the only complaints I have about the cast are the "Alias" transplants, Ron Rifkin and Balthazar Getty. Why ABC is so adamant to cast Getty in their shows is beyond me, he was as lifeless and boring as an actor as he was in "Alias" last season. And Rifkin, although great, I couldn't help but think "What's Sloane up to this time?!?". |

I liked Calista also. I couldn't see Rachel Griffiths in her role. There's a strangeness about Calista that'll work well for her as the "black sheep" of the family.

I too was bored for most of the show. I only seem to care when Rachel Griffiths and Sally Field were on the screen. They are compelling and talented. Calista Flockhart? I've never really liked her and she was just ok. I hope they don't give her heavy screen time. She's not the draw the producers think she is. She has very distracting malformed lips and a weird nose.
Most SFU fans will be tuning to support an alumnus. Also Sally Field is a draw. I love that's she's all wrinkly and has character. I liked that she is aging naturally. Too bad for Tom Skerritt though. I'll give this show some time to develop into something good. Sunday at 10 is a good time for me. |

I agree with you on the Alias guys indie. Balthazar Getty is just so stiff. Especially when compared to the other 2 brothers, who I loved. To be fair though, his character was by far the least fleshed out (except maybe the gay brother), so I'll give him a chance. Sloane though...I immediately thought he was bad news, and just couldn't picture him as a "good guy". But it seems like he might be bad news anyways?
Anyhow, I really liked it. It was obviously really dramatic, but its probably just a dramatic show by nature. Also it was the pilot, so I'm curious to see what it'll be like next week and from then on. I thought Callista was fine. Do the people who didn't like her just dislike her in general? I thought her acting was fine, and I've never had a problem with her as a person either. She looked like she gained like 3-5 pounds too. The youngest brother was hot, and seemed like a good actor...which is nice. Too often the "young cute guy" is just there for looks, but he seemed to have the acting skills to back it up. I'll definitely keep up with this one. Its nice that its on Sunday, because honestly what else is there to do at 10:00 Sunday? (besides watch Without a Trace, which I'll continue to do) |

I told someone at work about the show today and told them I thought Calista had gained 5 or 6 pounds
Maybe this show will help me change my mind about her. |

After the revelation that LaPaglia was the one recast, I have one problem with this show:
Old gay brother: ![]() is CLEARLY HOTTER than new gay brother: ![]() But good to see the love from some other posters. I really am excited about this show. And I, too, thought Calista Flockhard was perfectly cast and I think she really does add to the show. I think it's because she's playing it tame, whereas I'm used to her annoying as shit Ally McBeal antics. |

Thanks for the pics! Anthony LaPaglia is hot but the actor in the role now is also cute (even in that dorky photo!) and really fit in well with the rest of the sibs. I would have preferred Betty Buckley in the matriarch role, though.
And I agree with the Rachel Griffiths love - have been a fan since Muriel's Wedding. In fact, I'm watching My Best Friend's Wedding now and forgot that she had a small role as one of the slutty bridesmaids |

Jonathan LaPaglia is too "pretty" for the role. The new actor looks more like the quirky gay son, and in that family, I have to figure that the gay son will be one quirky motherfucker.

This show was both fascinating and frustrating. Fascinating because of the stellar cast and believable dialogue. Frustrating because not one of these characters were likable. It's not that they were unlikable, I just couldn't feel anything for any of them. Rachel Griffith is a terrific actress, so is Sally Field and the guy who played the drug addicted vet. But the disconnect in this show was so strong that I couldn't find a thing to like or care about anyone.
It's rare to come across a show with good production values, great actors and believeable dialogue yet walk away feeling so detached. This show reminded me of thirtysomething without the charm. |

i liked Calista too....not my favorite (Rachel G is) but I had no problem with her at all, and believed her to be a Republican.
Sally Field is great too, but the oldest (?) brother <the one who works for the dad> didn't seem to have a character at all. I'll tune in next week to see what plays outl. |

I could be totally off base but, isn't Calista a Republican in real life??

Loved it! I've been a huge fan of RG ever since Muriel's Wedding, and I guess I'm one of the few who like Calista Flockhart. And I thought Calista looked great, much better than her stick-thin AM days.
The only thing I didn't like was the death of Tom Skerritt. He always adds so much to a show, it was a shame he had to go. |
