Re: 2007-2008 Upfronts - NBC Update | ||
Quote: ABC's "Sam I Am," a half-hour dramedy about a woman who wakes up from a coma and realizes she wasn't the nicest person. Co-stars Jean Smart and Jennifer Esposito. Quote: It's an hour-long drama from ABC, easily one of the most ambitious, talked-about new pilots in development. Executive produced by Craig Wright ("Six Feet Under"), Bryan Singer, and Greg Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters"). Stars Peter Krause, Donald Sutherland, Jill Clayburgh, William Baldwin, Samaire Armstrong, and many others. Premise (from Futon Critic): Power, privilege and family money are a volatile cocktail. Living proof: The Darlings of New York City, so absurdly wealthy they put the "upper" in Upper East Side. This preeminent family's five spoiled adult brats one of them a Presidential candidate are always getting mixed up with the wrong people, including freeloading spouses, illegal immigrants and transvestite hookers. It will take a miracle to keep this Kennedy-esque clan out of the tabloids and out of jail. That miracle comes in the form of Nick George. As a boy, Nick watched his father surrender his freedom and family as the Darling's trusted consigliere. Burned by his own boyhood encounters with the family, Nick did a 180 and became a lawyer for the disadvantaged. But the passing of his dad thrusts the daunting responsibility of protecting the Darlings' secrets onto Nick. When the family's patriarch offers him an ungodly salary, Nick isn't sure if it's the chance of a lifetime - or a life sentence. In no time, he finds himself racing to plead with cops, hush the tabloids and furiously try to wipe the mud off the esteemed Darling reputation. With new disasters every week, hopefully Nick has the stamina for a marathon. Three-time Emmy(R) nominee Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under," "Sports Night"), Emmy(R) winner Donald Sutherland, and two-time Oscar(R) nominee Jill Clayburgh ("Ally McBeal," Starting Over, An Unmarried Woman) star in this younger, sexier, redheaded stepchild of Dallas and Dynasty. Emmy(R) and Pulitzer(R) nominated Craig Wright ("Brothers & Sisters," "Lost," "Six Feet Under") and executive producer Greg Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters," "Everwood") use over-the-top situations and razor-sharp satire to illustrate how scads of money can create a great American family... and demolish it. |

Are there any new reality shows coming out in the fall or is it the same as last year?

Does anyone have hard evidence that The Apprentice has been picked up? Please don't toy with my sanity.

With regards to the debate about Playmakers
The NFL forced the cancellation of the show not because of cheating husbands or because of a gay player. Playmakers featured players doing drugs before, during, and after games. It dramatized the use of steroids in the game. It showed professional football players as violent and full of rage. All in all, it was a terrible image for the NFL to be stuck with (Although closer to true than the NFL wants you to believe) The NFL threatened ESPN with the termination of its television rights to actual NFL footage if they didn't take Playmakers off the air, and ESPN complied |

So how will a show on ABC be any different? It's the same company.

As far as reality shows go, I think it's pretty much a given that ANTM will return. There's also the PCD show that's said to be casting for a second season.

Beauty and the Geek will probably be back as well.
It seems that all the new reality shows premiere in the summer nowadays. Maybe if one catches on in the summer we'll see season 2 in the spring. |

OF course ABC will be careful not to jeopardize any future superbowl contracts and since it isn't cable, Footballer Wives should be just another DespHWives with a football backdrop.
And why wouldn't NBC bring back The Apprentice since it is the #1 show in all of television? |

Thanks IdieKid.
Any info on Lipstick Jungle? The name alone has me interested. I too am shocked about Apprentice. Does it do well in other countries or something that makes up for the cold shoulder from the US? I just.don't.get.it. |

Methinks Trump has NBC by the balls or something. Otherwise it would've been canceled by now. NBC needs a new and interesting reality show that people haven't seen before. What have been some of their recent attempts at reality tv? Last Comic Standing, Treasure Hunters, and the Apprentice all suck. LCS was good for the first season, but beyond that it was terrible.

Isn't NBC the station that is doing that new crapfest about the best celeb look alike impersonations or is that another station?

Sadly, The Apprentice is one of NBC's biggest hits, which is not saying much. It does a lot better than the others shows they have on now. And Mark Brunette said the show would continue on another network if need be, which probably scared NBC.

I think it does okay in its timeslot. Maybe on another network it wouldn't be good enough to merit renewal, but NBC can only fill so many holes.

The following pilots have been given the go-ahead to make offers to upper-level writers, usually a pretty strong indication of a likely pick-up.
BIONIC WOMAN , NBC In this TV spinoff of "The Six Million Dollar Man", tennis pro Jamie Sommers was almost killed in a skydiving accident, but was saved by the U.S. Government, which used bionic parts to save her. Both legs, one arm, and one ear are artificial, which give her a number of super powers. She works as an agent for the Office of Scientific Investigations battling spies, fembots, mad scientists and aliens. Based on the book by the same name. LIFE , NBC After serving nine years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, a police detective rejoins the force and starts using Zen-like techniques in addition to traditional procedure to solve crimes. He's partnered with a tough female cop trying to rebuild her own reputation after a stint in rehab for drug addiction. JOURNEYMAN , NBC Father, husband and time traveler SAM LAWSON is dispatched each week to recalibrate an event that's off-line in the past while trying to maintain his life, family and sanity in the present. K-VILLE , FBC New Orleans cop show PERFECT GENTLEMAN FKA FIRMWOOD , ABC 4 high-powered CEOs or CEOs to be who are all friends. All members of the same exclusive golf club, they help one another get through the trials and tribulations of their high-class lives and the drama that takes place within all of their bedrooms and boardrooms. This has been described as a male version of Desperate Housewives. PUSHING DAISIES , ABC Romantic procedural in which a man is able to bring the deceased back to life with the touch of his hand, but for only one minute. Things become complicated when he falls in love with one of the deceased. |
