Anyone else watch the reruns on Nick at Nite? And was anyone else tricked by the false advertising about a Hillman Reunion? Well i still like the show, i think it got much better when Denise left though.

I love this show! I haven't been watching it recently, but I used to watch it everyday after school. I actually kind of liked the first season (mostly because I like Marisa Tomei, aka Maggie; she was hilarious), but I still liked it after that (especially because Whitley was one of my favorites). I also really liked Freddie. I absolutely hated Jaleesa and that other girl, the one who worked at the restaurant as a cook and had kind of short hair. She was disgusting! The show got ridiculous after a while, though, and I always would stop watching the reruns after Jada Pinkett came on (I couldn't stand her).

I hae seen pretty much every episode of this show and i love it. My favoriteis the one where Freddie and Ron hook up during the hurricane, and then broadcast the fact over the radio.

I remember this show. Whitley is one of my favorite TV characters ever. I never got a chance to see the first season. Is this show coming on DVD?

Yeah, I think the first two seasons are on DVD.
It's a decent show, but it's no Cosby Show. |

I think this show didn't take off until after Lisa Bonet left (and Debbie Allen took over the writing). When LB was there, it looked and felt like a spinoff for the sake of having a spinoff.

First season was really bad. Lisa Bonet looked and acted like she didn't want to be there. Marisa Tomei was good, but how come the writers never dealt with the subject of a white girl attending a historically black college? That could have been interesting, but she was just there and it made the Maggie character nothing more than a patronizing contrivance to make white viewers feel comfortable. The best seasons were 2-4, then it went downhill when Whitley and Kim became dorm counselors followed by Whitley and Dwayne honeymooning in LA right after the Rodney King verdict uprising.

I'll never forget Whitley's wedding which Dwayne crashed and professed his love.... fighting with the ushers to get down the aisle to her calling out, "Baby, please!"

oh I agree. This show got a lot better after LB left. Funny when you think about it.
Whitley is one of the bst TV characters from the 80s. Freddie = awesome especially when she got into pre-Law. Also liked it when that other CS minor character joined as one of the new kids in the last season. The fast talker. She was a ood addition. Better than Jada. |

charca a lot of historically black colleges have 10-20 percent white students so her presence didn't seem out of place although in general the presence of lisa bonet make this the worst season.

Actually during the first season, Hillman was not touted as an HBCU (Historically Black College/University). It wasn't until Cosby cleaned house with the writers and producers the second year that Hillman became a fictional HBCU modeled after Morehouse and Spelman. There were a few documentaries that described this transition. When Cosby brought in Debbie Allen, he let her do whatever she wanted to get the show back on track. Luckily she did because we would have NEVER experienced the joy of Whitley Gilbert!

This show also tackled some issues that were quite "heavy" for NBC's MUST SEE TV (media censorship, HIV etc).
