And seeing how many people think that Godfather 2 is better than the Godfather, how is it so much farther back on the list and didn't move up at all.

Granted that City Lights is a great movie, but how did it jump from 76 to 11?

again no Notorious (Hitchcock's greatest work)
No HIS GIRL FRIDAY?? Finally, Preston Sturges makes the list -with Sullivan's Travels, but The Lady Eve should be there. |

Someone already said this, but I think it bears repeating:
How could that piece of crap Titanic be on this list? There are a few other questionable movies, but this one is one of the worst movies I ever saw. A ridiculous plot coupled with two actors that had no chemistry with each other? |

FILMS GONE FROM LIST (with 1998 ranking)
39. Doctor Zhivago (1965) 44. The Birth of a Nation (1915) 52. From Here to Eternity (1953) 53. Amadeus (1984) 54. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) 57. The Third Man (1949) 58. Fantasia (1940) 59. Rebel Without a Cause (1955) 63. Stagecoach (1939) 64. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) 67. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) 68. An American in Paris (1951) 73. Wuthering Heights (1939) 75. Dances With Wolves (1990) 82. Giant (1956) 84. Fargo (1996) 86. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) 87. Frankenstein (1931) 89. Patton (1970) 90. The Jazz Singer (1927) 91. My Fair Lady (1964) 92. A Place in the Sun (1951) 99. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) Fargo,The Manchurian Candidate,Frankenstein and All Quiet On The West are the only 4 films that were unfairly booted from the original list. The Third Man despite an American Lead and a cameo by Orson Welles in the last third of the film is really a British film and should not have been on the original list. |

Youre right, I bet Third Man was disqualified. Or else, that would be a travesty.
Frankenstein has lately been considered to be inferior to the Bride of Franenstein. But that brings up the question, where the hell's Young Frankenstein? |

I'm glad The Shawshank Redemption made the list!!!!!
I was surprised to see Singing in the Rain at 5 and Raging Bull at 4. It seems like alot of the best movies are just "the first do to something." And I do agree that revolutionary films are wonderful and paved the way for most other movies but once I would like to see a modern movie be number one. I mean everyone agree Toy Story is better than Snow White, but since Snow White revolutionized animation, it receives a better spot. |

Old list was better | ||
|
I believe the old list was better, for this simple reason: if you compare the list of the added movies to the list of the dropped movies, I think the dropped ones are - on the whole - better.
Or maybe I can state it this way: if I was on a game show and the prize was a choice of a 100-DVD set of the first list or this list, I would choose the first list. The order will always be crazy, but when you're talking about the top 100 films out of thousands and thousands released, it has to be tough. That being said, the continued omission of Notorious is an abomination. |

Toy Story? | ||
|
I can't believe Toy Story would make the list.
My biggest disappointment among movies leaving is Patton. In addition to Notorious, I think that "Laura" (Otto Preminger, all-star cast - Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price) deserves to be on the list. |

Re: Toy Story? | ||

A lot of these movies are there for cultural signifigance as well as just being a "Great" movie. Take "Citizen Kane", it's great yes, but it also changed the way films were made the the lighting, camera angles and so on.
"Toy Story" is this way too. It was really the first big budget movie that used computer animation and changed the way we see animated movies these days. Besides "The Simpson's Movie" how many other 2-D animated movies are around anymore? That's why "Toy Story" made the list and should stay on it. I'm really the most surprised by "The General". Not even on the last list and finally they voters came to their senses! |

Re: AFI's Top 100 Movies - 10th Anniversary Edition | ||
Quote: The only films that have been added that are really disputable are Sixth Sense, Titanic and Toy Story (i.e., the new ones) Who can really make an argument that My Fair Lady, An American In Paris, Giant, Rebel Without A Cause, Dances with Wolves, Fargo, Fantasia, Stagecoach and Guess Whos Coming To Dinner should have been on the list in the first place? Many of those are good, but not truly 'essentials'. The only real tragedies are bumping off Manchurian Candidate, Frankenstein, and From Here to Eternity, in order to make room for Pixar, Shaymalan and James Cameron's ego. And stated earlier, I think Third Man was merely disqualified. Quote: I dont. The animation is obviously better, but these lists arent achievements in crafts. Children still watch Snow White. The story as reinterpreted by Disney is classic and still incredible. Quote: Big big X. I can live without Notorious, but Laura is the standard by which all mystery movies are judged and its still suspenseful. And it has the best musical theme of all time. I personally would have liked to see at least ONE horror film other than Silence of the Lambs make it in -- Alien or the Shining. |

It'd be interesting to see the top ten as selected by different age groups.

The Third Man was on the short list of 400. That means it fell of the list and wasn't disqualified

Quote: I don't think that is the case at all I just think there is no consensus over which comedian from the modern era would be included . For every supporter of Will Ferrell ,Vince Vaughn,Jim Carrey,Adam Sandler there is a huge detractor. All that being said over time I think The 40 Year Old Virgin, Office Space,The Princess Bride , Fargo,Groundhogs Day,The Truman Show and Raisng Arizona will be embraced more by critics and film buffs. |
