Posts: 34807 (06/21/07 3:27 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Another reason this list is kind of wonky from the AFI 100 Laughs - 100 Greatest Comedies 1 Some Like It Hot (1959) 2 Tootsie (1982) 3 Dr. Strangelove (1964) 4 Annie Hall (1977) 5 Duck Soup (1933) 6 Blazing Saddles (1974) 7 MASH (1970) 8 It Happened One Night (1934) 9 The Graduate (1967) 10 Airplane! (1980) 11 The Producers (1968) 12 A Night at the Opera (1935) 13 Young Frankenstein (1974) 14 Bringing Up Baby (1938) 15 The Philadelphia Story (1940) They had to step over THREE Mel Brooks movies (not to mention Airplane). All the other remaining films are on the list.

Many of those are good, but not truly 'essentials'. I would argue that Rebel, Dances, and Guess are better than newcomers LOTR, Sullivan's, and President's Men, for example. I also think that it was tragedy to lose Zhivago, Patton, and Mutiny. I also don't think that 12 Angry Men, Sophie's Choice, and Do The Right Thing deserve T100 status. Those are in my "good but not essential" category. I don't even understand President's Men being in the list as a movie - it was a great book about an incredible national tragedy but as a movie it's just ordinary, IMO - a basic 3-star flick. But at least we agree on Laura. I don't understand the lack of buzz about its omission either. If I were putting together a syllabus for a course called "Introduction to American Cinema", I can't imagine that Laura wouldn't be on it.

That renders this list as a fraud. Patton's simultaneously the best war film and the best biography ever made. What the hell are they thinking?

So I made a list of my own. Here is my top 100 American movies list. I made sure only to include American films, so don't expect Lawrence or Dr. Strangelove. I found out the US helped finance and and make 2001, so I'm including it on my list. 1. Citizen Kane 2. The Godfather 3. Casablanca 4. 2001: A Space Odyssey (still underappreciated) 5. Singin' in the Rain 6. Psycho 7. The Wizard of Oz 8. Gone with the Wind 9. Some Like It Hot 10. Vertigo 11. Star Wars 12. It's a Wonderful Life 13. Taxi Driver 14. The Godfather: Part II 15. Apocalypse Now 16. Raging Bull 17. The Searchers 18. Schindler's List 19. Chinatown 20. Pulp Fiction (why is this film so criminally underrated?) 21. Annie Hall 22. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 23. The Usual Suspects (is this cult classic to popular/mainstream to make AFI's list?) 69. Saving Private Ryan (but only for the first 30 minutes) 70. Guess is nowhere near one of the better Tracy, Hepburn or Poitier films it is certainly a historically significant film but it is barely even a good film and didn't belong anywhere near the first list.While James Dean is an icon of its and its historically important since Rebel is the first mainstream hollywood fare to deal with teen angst its heavy handed delivery and hammy performances have not aged it well at all. LOTR and Sullivans Travel for diff reasons deserve inclusion and will likely move up the list in time. I am indifferent about 12 Angry Men the film was ruined for me as a kid since i had seen way too many 12 angry men episodes in sitcoms before i knew about the movie. Agree about Sophies Choice I believe the actors who voted must have put this in there .I strongly disagree with you about Do The Right Thing though I don't think I have ever seen a movie tackle so many big issues dead on with so many memorable multidimensional charecters this is one I believe over time will go up there with Raging Bull as best American film of the 80's.

Yes, and it was only #89 in the first list, which is a travesty. I agree that it was "best in genre" as a war movie and a biography. It is top 5 in terms of my personal favorites, and my top 10-20 if I were doing my own historically significant T100.

My picks would be Citizen Kane (1941) - the great bio-pic, visually stunning and masterfully written a flawless picture The Godfather (1972) - genre gives it a huge boost I think in 50 years the sequel will be higher Schindler's List (1993) - I consider this to be the World War II film of all time so it gets the nod over Casablanca One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) - In my eyes the greatest story in the top ten Casablanca (1942) - I'll get some heat for this but I thought the plot was a little stale, the other four films are flawless To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) - grossly low, being a modern story hurts it Raging Bull (1980) - If Marty gets 1 film in the top ten it should be Raging Bull aside from being the best Boxing film of all time it shaped "great" acting for 20 years. Some people think the MVP should be the best player regardless of how well the team does; some think an MVP must be on a winning team. There is perhaps a difference between the "greatest" movies and the "most significant" movies. Some cult flicks are, IMO, significant but not great (Rocky Horror, anyone?) - and some of the movies on this list are there more for significance than greatness.
