Will & Grace fell into the same trap Friends did: Rely on big celebrity guests, rather than the original cast who once made the show what it is.
Granted, they haven't abused it as much as Friends did. Friends I actually refused to watch the last 3 seasons because of that. I was getting tired of trying to guess which hotshot celeb would steal the show every week. |

^ I love W&G, but even Friends didn't abuse Guest Star of the Week like they did. Once the show really broke out, it got ridiculous.

I believe that W&G had many more guest stars than Friends ever did.

May I add that I love, Love, LOVE the live episodes!! Especially the one where Jack had the worst glitter tragedy since Mariah Carey!

As a loyal fan of both shows, W&G definitely had far more guest stars in 8 seasons, than Friends ever had in 10 seasons.

Quote: Oh absolutely. And they got called on it all the time. Ask any Entertainment Weekly subscriber. They constantly bitched about it in that magazine. |

Wow...I'd forgotten all about Madonna guest starring on the show. As funny as she as her character was, she wasn't that memorable. Will on painkillers...so cute.

My bad, I always thought Friends has had more guest stars. But now that I think of it, the first couple of season we preactically guest star-free, whereas W&G didn't waste anytime inviting them. So yeah, makes sense. It's just that Friends seemes to have progressively more and more of them, which is why I felt like the show's quality had declined towards the end.

Quote: I think they were both a little guilty of that. Which is a shame, because the main characters on both shows were more than enough IMO to carry the shows without having to rely on gimmicks like the "guest star of the week". I didn't mind some of the recurring characters like Beverly Leslie for example. And the guest stars like Minnie Driver and Woody Harrelson were great because they had storylines that spanned a few episodes. But bringing in somebody for just one ep got a little played out. |

Also, Friends brought in guest stars to play characters...more often than not Will and Grace had celebrities playing themselves.

I <3'd Willy Wonka as Mr. Stein. He was hilarious!
Ooh, and as far as guest stars playing themselves, my fav. was Kevin Bacon. Loved that episode where Will is mistaken as his stalker. Kevin confronts him, Will denies it, attempts to leave, then Kevin begs him to stay. They end up doing the Footloose dance. Hilarious. But, yeah...the show had TONS of guest stars. It was ridiculous. Check out the list at wikipedia. Its like a freakin' essay! |

Just saw part 1 of the episodes where Karen hires M        Macaulay Culkin to represent her in court against Stan (divorce).

Oh crap how could we all forget about the Kevin Bacon episode. When Will and Kevin ever started dancing to Footloose I lost it.
I love when JLo was on as well, that was a good one. "Why can't you just perform with one dancer"? "Because I want two" "You cant just perform with one dancer"? "No" "But Why" "Because I need two" |

I know its been said before, but Karens character is PURE GENIUS....my god, what would this show have been like without her, she made every show for me!!!!.......I watch an hour of W&G re-runs every night before bed, and never get sick of them.......I was sooo upset with the Megan Mullally show, cuz, well, she wasnt Karen...i dont wanna see Megan, talk about a character role sticking with you, i wanted it to be the Karen Walker show or the Anastasia Beaverhausen show!....
Love whenever Beverly Leslie would walk in a room or something and Karen slides off her chair, she looks so distressed when she sees him......or the episode where Grace wears the cow-print skirt to work, and Karen walks over to her and is like, " Oh move.....move.....mooooooove"...haha |

Jack & Karen >>>>>>>> Will & Grace, BY FAR!
I'm watching some old episodes from the 3rd season. LOVE IT when J & K bitch-slap each other several times at Joe and Larry's wedding during "Coffee and Commitment!!" |

Its funny that you mention season 3, because when I was watching it a couple of months ago...it kinda became a little stale/derivate at that point.
I loved the first 2 seasons, kinda feel indifferent about the third, but, IMO, it rebounded nicely in the 4th season. Though, I did enjoy the blossoming relationship Grace & Nathan had towards the end of the season. |
