After last year's debacle in Los Angeles, which saw the most affected beauty queen ever win, the most refreshing and interesting candidate in years be relegated to 2nd, and crackwhore par excellence Tara Conner finish an undeserving 5th in a crappy-ass Project Runway dress, I'm hoping for better. But it ain't going to happen. Barring a last-minute sense of clarity, the field will be stacked with Latinas (some of whom are mediocre) and there will only be token representations from other regions of the world in the elite 20 or 15 or 10 or whatever. Not that I hate Latinas, but I find many of them who compete in Miss Universe and such a tad affected.
Among the front-runners are the USA's relatively saintly Rachel Renee Smith, Puerto Rico's Wilmadilis "Uma" Blasini Perez, Mexican home favorite Rosa Maria Ojeda Cuen, powerhouse Venezuela's Lydimar Jonaitis Escalona, Russian beauty Tat'yana Kotova, Japanese model Riyo Mori, South Korean fave Ha-nui Honey Lee, and India's Puja Gupta. This also marks the first time that delegates from Montenegro and Tanzania will be represented in Miss Universe. Returning to the fold are delegates from Barbados, Belize, Curacao, Honduras, and Italy. But there are no reps from the following countries and territories that were present last year: Cayman Islands, Chile, Ethiopia, Ghana, Great Britain, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Namibia, Northern Marianas, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Maarten, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turkey.
