My two cents.
If they're going by looks alone, I say it's between ... ![]() Tanzania ![]() Greece ![]() Venezuela or ![]() Russia. Since Trump's has a bad aftertaste from the winners from Venezuela (Alicia Machado got fat) and Russia (Oxana Federova stopped showing up to sponsor events), I think it means the competition is between Greece and Tanzania. But since it's in Mexico, the audience could propel the hometown girl to Mexico's second crown. Mexico USA is sending its best delegate in at least five years, but she won't win because it's held in Mexico, and she's already been booed by the locals. ![]() USA Japan is sending a plainer version of last year's stunning Kurara Chibana, who should have won. The judges may try to "right a wrong" by making Japan's this year's winner. ![]() If it's a predictable year, the Top 10 will be 7 Latinas, USA, India, and a token African contestant. Surprisingly this year's crop of Latina contestants is disappointing. Besides Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, and Peru, there are no other standouts. So, it may be a good year for first timers or countries that are overlooked. Philippines and Thailand are cute, but will probably get overlooked. I don't get the hype over Korea. On a different note, how come most of the countries' national costume is "whore"? |

We have the worse batch of latinas and it's biased if they dominated.
I mean this year had the best batch of black women and Asians. |

Yup, this pageant has been heavily latina-biased in the past few years. The most obvious being 2005 when we had Miss Canada Natalie Glebova against 4 latin americans in the top 5. Luckily she won...
That year also had the most biased top 15 ever, with only one black, Miss Trinidad and Tobago and one Asian, Miss Indonesia. Both of whom failed to make the top 10. Meanwhile, hometown girl Miss Thailand was totally snubbed. |

![]() The Indians always seem to have one of the most well-designed, colorful and flattering national costumes, huh? She looks pretty tall too. Nice. I think that former Miss World from INDIA is one of the most beautiful women in the ... err... world. Darn, I forget her name atm. |

Ricky Martin's beard/girlfriend, Rebeca de Alba, has withdrawn from the preliminary judging panel. She said that it was not right that her judging be limited only to tonight's prelims. She also said that having two judging panels was wrong - she has judged pageants where there was only one panel that judged during the prelims AND the main event, and the format is more conducive to producing as fair a result as can be allowed. This means that there will be no Mexicans in any of the judging panels for the contest.

Why do we need a Mexican on the judging panel? Dont they take enough jobs already?

Expect a Latina to win this year's pageant. It doesn't matter if she's from Mexico or Puerto Rico. Oh well.

Two days to go, and some news:
A topless photo of Lucie Hadasova, Miss Czech Republic Universe, was published in a Aha, a Czech tabloid. I don't think she'll be disqualified and sent home so close to the finals, but I don't think it will help her. Interesting to note that her neighbor to the east, Lucie Senasiova (Miss Slovakia Universe), posed for the Slovak version of Playboy before she won her national title but was still allowed to compete. Global Beauties (the premier pageant news website) named South Korea's Honey Lee as their favorite to take the title. She could very well be the first South Korean to win Miss Universe, and with the Virginia Tech/Seung-hui Cho tragedy still fresh on everyone's mind, a successful outing could restore some national pride (Ms. Lee has mentioned the tragedy in interviews leading up to the contest). Also, the South Korean town of Pyeongchang is the front-runner to win hosting rights for the 2014 Winter Olympics (the winner to be decided in a few weeks). This could very well be the year of South Korea. In addition to the favorites, two new names have been tossed into the ring: Valentina Rossi of Italy and Farung Yuthitham of Thailand. There will be a Mexican judge on the night of the finals. Hairstylist Ken Paves dropped out, and his replacement is Mexican actor Mauricio Islas. Cecilia Bolocco, the 1987 winner of the pageant, will not be present at the contest. There was supposed to be a special presentation on the 20th anniversary of her coronation, but the controversy surrounding topless photos of her with another man (not her estranged husband, former Argentinian president Carlos Saul Menem) has squashed that. By the by, the stage is just trashy. It looks like a set of rectangular go-go cages. Will cage dancing be part of future Miss Universe events? |
