Everything comes up roses for honorees

If you're a rose freak, the Colleyville Woman's Club awards luncheon last week was the place for you.
Roses -- dozens and dozens of yellow, red, pink, lavender and white blooms -- decorated every table in the ballroom of the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas for the Colleyville Woman's Club Circle of Hope Recognition Awards and Grants Presentation. Long name. Long program.
But that's because the club has so many nice people to thank. After all, those members want to mind their manners. And they had many, many agencies to give the $217,000-plus that they awarded last week. The cash was distributed after many, many woman-hours working on major fund-raisers such as the group's holiday home tour and its spring fashion show.
From Alliance for Children to the YWCA, 30 area organizations benefited from the past year's fund-raising efforts. At the event, chaired by Karen Vlach, each agency's representative was recognized and its specific uses of the grant were announced. Outdoor lighting, help for the homeless, infant safety seats and grief support groups -- just a few of the various projects.
Even if you weren't someone getting a big fat check from the club, this luncheon was well worth attending. Besides the lovely arrangements, the food was better than any I've had at a luncheon in a long, long time. Wanna hear what was on the menu? Things started off with a salad of field greens, grilled asparagus and dried tomatoes. The main course was char-grilled pork tenderloin medallions, and the finale was a chocolate ganache roulade, plus fruit in a cookie-shaped cup.
For the first time, the names of who would win the club's Caring With Commitment Member Awards weren't a secret but were announced in advance so all hubbies, children and friends could attend. Each award, represented by a different-colored rose, is distinguished by years of service and, I'm assuming, outstanding volunteerism.
Receiving the Tyro Award were Gay Nell Ball, Hurst, and Jeannie Colbert, North Richland Hills. The Carillon Award went to Paula Bearden and Deanne E. Brown, both of Colleyville. Tammy J. Nakamura, Colleyville, won the Auragold Award, and the Sterling Award was given to Evelyn Englert, Katherine M. Hoshi, Mary K. Martin and Maurine Wood, all of Colleyville.
The Excalibur Award honored Mary G. Andrews and Renova W. Williams, both of Colleyville, and the top award, the Regency Award, recognized Patti J. Irwin, Pat Davis Jones and Shirley L. Schollmeyer, all of Colleyville, for more than 10 years of service.
One interesting twist came earlier in the program, when the Patron Awards were given out. Former sports anchor Scott Murray, as the day's master of ceremonies for the sixth year, had been demonstrating his prowess as a skillful reader because his script at this event was long. Scott and American Airlines both were named, and Scott could hardly give himself an award. So club President Jan Fisher of Colleyville stepped in and not only gave Scott his award but provided his vocal chords the only relief in more than an hour's worth of reading.
