For those who don't have cable, I'm sure many are forced to watch PBS. What's your favorite Saturday morning/afternoon PBS cooking show?

I cannot stand that skinny man on Americas Test Kitchen. He bugs the shit out of me. He proclaims to be a "Chef" "cook" or whatever, yet he's skinny as hell. NEVER trust a skinny chef. That's what I always heard.
I do like Lydias Italian Table or whatever it's called. She is an awesome cook. PBS cuts through the BS that you have to wade through over at Food Network. I am so sick of Rachael Ray, I could slit a throat. |

I have the America's Test Kitchen Cookbook. It is awesome, I highly recommend it. It isn't just recipes, there's alot of helpful advice.

They rule. After Alton Brown, of course, but ATK--geeks supreme that they are--have taught me more about technique and ingredients and equipment than anyone else. (My mother says her generation actually learned this stuff in Home Ec classes, but all my generation has is TV--or cooking school.) Also, CooksIllustrated.com (one of ATK's websites, and well worth $20/year) is a great resource.

I love Lydia and her shows.
Family Table/Italian Table/Italian-American Table/table she bought at IKEA...all of them. And her son Joseph, total yum. I haven't caught any of Everyday Food yet. Seen a few Test Kitchens. Count me among those who hate the host. I like the main female chef, and like when they compare products for taste, value, etc. There's this show called Christina Cooks, starring vegan Christina somethingorother. It's fine that she's a vegan, but she's an annoying vegan. And I hate cooking tofu. I caught this one cook called Zonya on the smaller NYC PBS station. She's okay, and very informative, but she said that while her Mexican LaZonya (ugh!) was in the oven, that gave you 20 minutes to go exercise. Bitch, please! It all just makes me miss classic Julia Child all the more, before she developed the hump, got old, died, and we found out that she was a homophobe. |

I like watching Joanne Weir's shows, even though she can be a tad annoying. But she's certainly better than Sandra Lee.
Aside from Ina Garten, Lidia Bastianich is perhaps the best gastronomic diva on television. The thing is, however, on Saturdays in my neck of the woods, Lidia's Italian Table and Barefoot Contessa air at the same fucking time! Christina Pirelli is reason enough to stick to eating meat. She can be such a condescending bitch, and her food looks kind of unappetizing. There are die-hard vegans in Berkeley who have more tact and class than she does. |

Quote: Thank you. Christina Pirella. I hate her with a passion. She used to be on one of the local cable channels called CN8, and would cook in front of a small group of people (like 4-8), and would start the recipes, but then have them finish them, and she was SO obnoxious about how they would do anything different from the way she would do it, even if she had not explained herself. "Okay, go cut up some bok choi. No. More like this." |

I hate Joanne Weir with a passion. I also hate the title of her show, "Weir Cooking in the City." Have any of you caught the episodes where she's teaching a student how to cook? Bitch talks to all of them like they're 5. Not in the rude but informative way, but in this fake, sugary tone of voice that makes my ears bleed.
I will sit through ATK, Lidia, and Mexico: One Plate at a Time. Rick's daughter is another that gets on my nerves but I love Mexican food so I put up with it. eta: I haven't heard anything about a new House series. I didn't watch the last Texas Ranch one. The ones I remember enjoying were Manor House and Frontier House. |

Another one that doesn't suck just came on a few minutes ago, and reminded me. It's Daisy Cooks! with Daisy Martinez. She has a tendency to drop in Spanish words with a heavy accent like Giada di Laurentiis does with Italian words, but I don't find it as annoying with Daisy.

Quote:Several of Julia Child's "The French Chef" shows are available on DVD. I got the first one from Netflix and am enjoying the hell out of it. It's wonderfully dated: Making bouillabaisse: "Now you put in olive oil. Of course, if you don't like olive oil, you could always just use vegetable oil. (This is fish stew, remember.) Making salade nicoise: "Now, here's something you'll never see unless you know some Swiss ladies who will ship it to you--it's called a 'salad spinner'." Absolutely priceless. |

Thanks for that heads-up, veil. I never even thought to look on Netflix, but just added a few of the individual discs to my queue.

I Love Daisy Cooks! She's very pleasant to watch and funny. Her show is based mostly on Puerto Rican menus but it's not like anything is extra fancy
or expensive. She's full of tips and she likes to have a beer with her food! My kind of gal! If you like to add spices and love heat in your foods,
she's the one to watch.

I just can't watch ATK. It's like that SNL skit Anal Retentive Chef come to life. I do like Cooks Illustrated, Cooks Country and all the assorted books. I guess it's because I can skim over all the OCD stuff in the books. |

Have you noticed how the word "actually" has infected the entire crew on "America's Test Kitchen"? Watch it sometime and count how
often the word is said, very annoying. Otherwise I don't mind tall, skinny, bowtie wearing Chris Kimball.
Jacque Pepin has a show. He seems like a sweet guy but I can understand only about one third of what he says. The same is true of the Spainish fellow from "Made in Spain". Very heavy accent. I could watch Lidia all day, just love her. |

The local PBS station here still shows some episodes of Julia; it is the series made at the end of her career when she cooks with other chiefs, not as
enjoyable as her earlier work. I miss the Frugal Gourmet. Jeff Smith must have been banned for life after the stories involving him in some kind of
pedophilia situation surfaced.
