WASHINGTON – Amid diminishing media interest, Sarah Palin has quit her high-profile bus tour halfway through and returned to Alaska with her family, according to RealClearPolitics.
The move puts a damper on widespread speculations that Palin's "One Nation" bus tour, which launched on Memorial Day, was a potential precursor to a potential White House bid for 2012. Palin never made it to her scheduled stops in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
RealClearPolitics, which originally broke the story about the bus tour, reported Wednesday on Palin's "extended hiatus." The remaining legs of her trip, according to Scott Conroy, are "in limbo" as "Palin and her family have reverted to the friendly confines of summertime Alaska."
The "One Nation" tour launched with intense media interest, as reporters initially followed Palin and her family on the road, diligently trying to decipher the former half-term Alaska governor and ex-GOP vice presidential nominee's 2012 intentions. But after being ignored and mislead and denied interviews or access, reporters' attention fizzled.
Palin has been remarkably coy about her plans for 2012, declining to rule out a presidential run but refusing to come any closer than saying she has "fire in the belly."

Palin said Wednesday that her “One Nation” bus tour would resume “when the time comes.” She added that she’s looking forward “to hitting the open road again:”
Imagine our surprise when reading media reports today that the “One Nation Tour” has been cancelled. Why didn’t anyone tell me? Oh, wait, that’s because it hasn’t been cancelled. (Good ol’ media… you never cease to amaze!) As I said myself at the end of the east coast leg of the tour, the summer is long, and I’m looking forward to hitting the open road again. The coming weeks are tight because civic duty calls (like most everyone else, even former governors get called up for jury duty) and I look forward to doing my part just like every other Alaskan. I wouldn’t think it to be such a slow news day that, what with numerous wars and serious economic woes concerning Americans, a bus is driving news stories today. The next leg of the tour continues when the time comes. In the meantime, no one should jump to conclusions – certainly not the media with their long track record of getting things wrong or just making things up. - Sarah Palin

ABC News' Sheila Marikar (@SheilaYM) reports: Sarah Palin's northeast tour took to the water this morning as she hit Liberty Island today with her parents and youngest daughter, Piper. They were accompanied by approximately 10 park rangers and police escorts as they made their way to the Statue of Liberty. It's a scene we'll likely be seeing for some time to come. Palin confirmed that she's going to Boston after New York and that after the northeast, she'll go back to Alaska before re-launching the tour - called the "One Nation Tour," after all - on the West Coast. She told ABC News about her plans after she leaves the northeast: "Go back to Alaska - in fact today, Willow [the middle Palin daughter] already had to get back to work so she had to leave - go back to Alaska, come back on the trail again, and take the tour west as the summer progresses." Asked if she'll go all over the country, Palin said, "that is our plan, our tentative plan, anyway." http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/06/sarah-palin-confirms-tour-will-go-national.html
