But just want to say nice job here, I don't agree with the whole post, but I do like that you showed it is possible to create a diverse cast with attractiveness and interesting personalities. I myself would love to see a cast full of applicants. Nice job,

Posts: 367 01/13/11 05:45 PM Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Improved with Input/Criticism here As ratings decline, CBS appears to be floundering around with gimmicks and mactor casts in inept and lame attempts to salvage Survivor. In my opinion, CBS has failed to recognize what created Survivor's success and the loyalty of its fan base. 1 - Sports, Game Shows, and Voyeurism are all forms of Reality TV. Survivor always was and is mostly a SPORT! Consider that this truth was brilliantly recognized in the creation of Hard Knocks which filled in the missing reality aspects of the NFL which Survivor always had incorporated! Survivor derived from an early X-game - Eco-Challenge. The most successful programming on CBS is the NFL. The game does not change. In fact in many respects it is repetitive (and is exceeded in its repetitiveness by other sports like basketball, not to mention individual sports like tennis). In some ways the closest sporting event to Survivor is team, match play golf, like the Ryder Cup. What changes from season to season is the personalities, the storylines, and how our homeboys/girls do in competition with the rest of the country. Casting 10 Californians (Southern-only at that) and an undiverse cast of cheerleaders, pageant contestants, lawyers, the narrowly politically correct, and mactors destroys the fan’s connection with the show. ITS THE FANS, STUPID! 2- Encouraging fans to apply and casting from that pool was a core genius aspect of Survivor! Turning that into a cynical PR stunt repeatedly insults the show's fan base. The casting of a single applicant, Gary, in Fiji (and in later seasons similarly cynical and mocking castings like Shambo) in the role of fodder and as the insulting and mocking personification of the LA myopic stereotypes of loser, Flyoverland applicant/fans should have resulted in pink slipping of the entire Casting Department. Fiji caused fans like me to simply stop applying and began my growing resentment of the jokers who have done their best to ruin my show. It is somewhat like when I was a kid I had to endure the incompetent management of my Tampa Bay Buccs - I watched because I loved football, but the stands were empty. By they way, the Buccs' management claimed to be player personnel (casting) experts too. 3- Further, hiding behind California entertainment law to run a “contest” “game show” and “competition” for a “prize” of $1 million and then essentially deceptively recruiting friends, subjects of favors, brilliant discoveries at local taco stands … is 1) incredibly stupid, 2) completely unethical and 3) arguably illegal if done by any of business in America subject to contest laws and not immunized by Cali entertainment law. It would be characterized as fraud. 4- The magic of Survivor was that it was a sporting event that fans could play! That is, it did not require extreme physical prowess or specific skills. Rather, any number of methods could prove effective and the skills tested in Survivor derived from life. The diversity of methods to win only makes the sport more interesting (unlike say the "copycat" problem of the current NFL game). And if a fan couldn’t apply in any given season due to life's situations, they knew that either someday they would or they knew of friends or family that could apply and encouraged them to do so. Additionally, the casts were diverse (other than an early lack of ethnic minorities which was eventually rectified) and fans could identify with at least one member of the cast. There was nothing better than a Cirie who overcame her weight and lack of outdoor experiences with a tenacious passive/aggressive game of innuendo and a lot of charisma. 5- The decision to begin heavily recruiting Survivor beginning in Palau, was a terrible mistake in judgment. It culminated in the disastrous season of Fiji and appears to have been repeated in S22, with its lone applicant, Ralph. 6- The best the fans can now hope for is that S22 bombs and CBS ends its disastrous and inept management of Survivor and that some new producers and management buys the franchise and take the show to a new network. 7- Do not mistake Survivor’s success with current management. The show’s original concept was so strong that it achieved success despite the inept current management. GAME DESIGN & CASTING – SURVIVOR 23 ~~(v 2.0)~~ (v 3.0) Location – Caramoan Peninsula, Philippines (The) Caramoan (Peninsula) has been a favorite site for international franchises of Survivor. The place has hosted the Serbian version in two consecutive seasons. It has also hosted the Israel version of Survivor for two previous seasons. Israel has also planned to film their fifth season in Caramoan in 2011. Bulgarian Survivor also filmed their fourth season there in May to July 2009. Robinson 2010, the twelfth season of the Swedish version of the franchise, was also filmed in Caramoan from May to June 2010. The 8th season of Koh-Lanta (French edition of Survivor), was also shot entirely in Caramoan. TV director Corinne Vaillant, stated that "the powdery sand, the coconuts on Gota beach and the neighboring islets are a 'dream' for the French people. We chose Caramoan because it’s really wild. It’s necessary that contestants don’t see anything other than nature for them to believe that they’re really lost in the wilds.” (from Wikipedia) Game Design - Cast of 20, Split in two tribes of 10. Merge at 12, Jury of 9, Final 3. Casting Notes - The cast is composed entirely of applicants to the 2010-2011 Sears' Competition. They are notewhorthy for their enthusiasm for the show and accomplishments. There are no recruits or LA mactors and California is represented proportionally resulting in improved geographic diversity. With all due respect, CBS, an unintended consequence of the Sears’ Competition is that it thoroughly refutes assertions by people associated with casting that recruiting was necessary due to the applicant pool’s lack of interesting, qualified people. Actually, it not only refutes the assertion, it raises a host of issues relating to CBS’ business ethics and practices. The cast includes 13 non-Hispanic whites or 65% of the cast which is very close to the USA’s population as a whole – and also includes the 1^st Polynesian, and 2^nd(?) Native-American, along with a foreign-born, white male. Emphasis is placed upon humor and strong authentic personalities. Both African-Americans are articulate, middle class, college grads; enough of the Ebonic ghetto castings. Mose, the Hawai’ian, has a little bit of street vibe but he’s also an NCO. Two Survivors (Matt & Glen) are from the same hometown in Colorado, but they are both compelling castings who fit in separate tribes. Boulder is a city of roughly 125,000 and it’s unlikely that they know each other. S22 includes multiple castings from Santa Monica and past seasons have even people who attended the same church, let alone the two All-Star seasons, and Guatemala and FvF with casts with uneven levels of prior association. Cast Profiles and Tribal Construction 13786/1309 (.795) [CBS Sears Video Number/Video-Survivor.com Number and current 1/3 video rating] Blue Tribe which represents “Diversity” is named “Uri” which means types, short for “Sari-Saring Uri” which means diversification. “Sergeant” Mose ( 24 ), Quincy ( 30 ), Mosiah “Maximus” ( 31 ), Glen ( 47 ), “Papa” John ( 64 ) - Chelsea ( 19 ), Tamara ( 25 ), Christy ( 28 ), Tiffani ( 36 ), Star ( 51 ) Average Age = 35.4 Primary Tribal Dynamic: Diversity, with tensions structurally maximized, 5 non-Hispanic whites are also the 5 oldest. 12316/586 ( .667 ) – “Sergeant” Mose, 24, Hawai’i, Army Reservist Demo – 20s Pacific Islander ( Samoan ) male Storyline – Diverse, Pacific Islander ( Polynesian ) ethnicity. No previous Polynesian has been represented. U.S. Army Reservist. Skilled, self-described “Island Boy” who grows taro, spear fishes, constructs objects with native materials. If Philippines are used, fits with the story of the Philippines as the ancestral home of the Polynesian ( “Vikings of the Pacific” ) people. Best Quote - "I also have a secret weapon ... The point of this thread, of course, is simply to refute the assertion by Casting and regurgitated as cliche by pro-recruit tools here that it is impossible to cast a show of interesting and telegenic people from the applicant pool. All recruits are hot, interesting and articulate and all applicants are boring, ugly and stupid (especially when casting only casts applicants who are just that, e.g., Fiji).

Good point, PGY88. You got me re-thinking that one. The idea was to cast an ethnically diverse tribe against a tribe of free-spirits. But your criticism is valid. I have a hunch that the "Diversity" tribe might have a better team dynamic than the "Individuality" tribe which would be kind of interesting, but perhaps superficially. Well they must be undiverse, mostly white men ... no the cast is more ethnically, professionally, and geographically diverse than Survivor 22. Then they must be fat and stupid ... nope they are fit and accomplished. Then they must be un-telegenic. Nope they all spoke well and clearly on camera and while not a bunch of models they are a rather good looking bunch. And they are all fans and applicants ... I don't want to hear any more stupid shit from fantards talking about how recruits are necessary because the applicant pool only contains boring ugly retards.
