Following a walkout by the state Senate Democrats, depriving Republicans of the three-fifths majority needed to pass the budget and its controversial anti-public union provisions, the NBC affiliate in Madison now reports that sources say the Dems have left the state entirely. This comes after the state Senate majority leader said that the State Patrol could be called in to round up the Dems. However, leaving for another state would presumably place the legislators beyond the state's jurisdiction. (Fun fact: The state Senate leader and the Assembly Speaker are brothers -- and the new head of the State Patrol is their father.) I asked the state Democratic Party for comment on this latest report, but communications director Graeme Zielinski was unable to confirm anything. "I know the whereabouts of not a single Democratic senator," said Zielinski. "I do not know what latitude they're on, or know what longitude they're on. I assume they're in this hemisphere, I'll say that." Under Republican Gov. Scott Walker's plan, as TPM has posted, most state workers would no longer be able to negotiate for better pensions or health benefits or anything other than higher salaries, which couldn't rise at a quicker pace than the Consumer Price Index. Walker and state Republican leaders have said the plan to limit the collective bargaining rights of state employees is necessary to deal with the state's budget shortfall. According to the Associated Press: "The proposal would effectively remove unions' right to negotiate in any meaningful way. Local law enforcement and fire employees, as well as state troopers and inspectors would be exempt." Which pushed most people on the side of the public employees, since they have been hammered over the last two years (furloughs and paycuts). And then within 24 hours, the idiotic teachers union in Madison told the teachers to call in sick and go to the state capitol to protest, which puts most of us parents back on the “yeah, property taxes are too high, and now you’re getting paid to not teach.” I know if I didn’t show up to work for three days without an excuse I’d be fired.

Thousands of school teachers all over the state called in sick today. And here's an interesting fun fact about Gov. "Fiscal Hawk" Walker: First, understand that the Wisconsin budget runs on a two year cycle and the current cycle ends June 30th of this year. At the beginning of January, when Walker took office, the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau (yes, they go to extreme lengths to remain neutral, and both political parties highly respect the research they turn out), did an analysis of the current budget and determined that if Walker made no changes the fiscal cycle would end with a $122 million surplus. However, after his first five weeks in office, Walker had turned that number around so that there will now be at least a $137 million deficit. I'd really like to know where that money went, because as a middle-class taxpayer in this state, I sure haven't seen any of it.

Posts: 691 02/17/11 06:16 PM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Walker in his best "let them eat cake" way was quoted as saying that while the teachers would lose 18% of their pay, they would save some of that by no longer having to pay union dues. The protest is suppose to continue tomorrow. Our local school joined the festivities today. Several of the schools have said that any teachers that are out sick have to bring in a doctors note, but I don't think they will be able to make that stick since all the contracts say a DR's note is not needed unless they are out for MORE than 3 days. As long as everyone is in class on Monday they are good and can schedule another festival later next week . Also some of them are taking personal days rather than sick days and those can be used for anything. Ya gotta love the cheesers! They know how to party. As someone else pointed out walker had some backing until he tried to pull a union busting backroom run. Now he is just an idiot that we are stuck with for long four years.
