Ha ha. I'll talk about Alaska after Hawaii is done, okay? Basically I just picked the 16 most interesting characters I hadn't used in Hawaii.

Okay there is a LOT of stuff here that I've never publicly mentioned before. Here are my pretty extensive episode notes for episode one. I basically give the whole backstory here of why the cast was chosen, why the style changes between episode 1 and 4, and why I didn't even want Frank in the cast (or xxx as the boot) in the first place. Even old readers will probably find this stuff interesting.

Yeah, like I'm not eating this all up.
It's like your favorite tv show/movie has come out on a super duper Criterion dvd with all the notes and commentary. great insight. I think I knew most of it (certainly the Frank stuff) and how this grew from a couple posters to tons and tons. I remember I didn't have a home computer at the time and would be rushing to get to work on a new episode day -it was as exciting if not more (because it had so many people you cared about) than the real episodes. To me the casting errors were natrually Frank and John. And where was Jerri. However, this also led it to being somewhat more authentic. No way would every single one of the ideal cast be available, and replacements probably would be brought in -in real life, behind the scenes drama would cause casting choices that we wouldn't ever know about and be stratching our heads about -so it felt fine. (In Alaska's reunion, Rudy was intended to be included in Hawaii, but had an ailment; Jerri was contracted to another network and couldn't do Hawaii etc. Frank it seems would be Burnett's type to take over the Rudy slot -and it proved right when Amber and Jenna were included when Colleen and Lis declined the real thing) When Rich wasn't voted off the first episode, and the first line of the entire story, I did think, "hmmmm, maybe this is just an excuse for some deranged Survivor fantatic to relive Rich and Sue's old glory days." Without giving anything away, it most certainly wasn't. Each move and thought naturally unfolds with none of the characters being robots just making the best move they could as a variable, but instead successfully getting into their heads and reacting how they would by both thier hearts and their mind -and not in a vacuum of the season they played in, but with the element of time gone by also in their experience. *Micheal's inclusion would have happened. he was going to be on the real thing, but got trumped by Rupert for obvious reasons. *I think Teresa or Gretchen would have been dropped for another young female -that sucks but it's business -in order to ensure CBS eye candy going deep in the game. yeah, gee, I'm not still obsessed or anything with the grandfather of Survivor fanfics. |

Hey, Mario. I had heard of your serialized fanfics but never had a chance to read them so I'm getting into Hawaii with fresh eyes.
To be honest, I have never really been into reading fictional fanfics. I understand by definition they are fictional, but the only ones I've really read were those Poody did of actual online games. Of course, this is a whole different kettle of fish since as a writer you have to stay true to the character as much as possible within the situations that they were in. The first episode really drew me in and I loved how much detail you put into it, the thoughts of the characters especially. It was interesting how you also included the producers as part of the story. Just some background color that we usually don't think about. Everything flowed logically and things were set up that would play out in later episodes. Absolutely riveting. So how much time do you spend on each episode? |

Hey thanks a lot!
Quote: Yeah I'll probably get into that more in my episode two commentary but a lot of that is thanks to Rob Cesternino. A lot of the Survivor alums were big fans of my stories, but Rob C was probably the biggest of the bunch. In fact, after Amazon ended and he was allowed to contact me, the first thing he did was drop me a line and ask if I'd ever consider putting him in my next story. He said he'd even work with me behind the scenes if I wanted since he thought the stories were so cool. Well unfortunately I never wrote any more stories after Amazon, so he sort of missed his window, but it was funny that the first time we exchanged emails, he was just as excited to meet me as I was to meet him. Anyway, Rob wasn't really ever able to get into a story, but he did go and help me out with some of the problems with my older ones. In particular, he pointed out that in Hawaii, I always had players talking to the cameramen. In my mind, the players in Survivor just sat around and talked to the cameras whenever they felt like it. Well Rob pointed out that when we see "confessionals" on TV, those aren't just the player and the cameraman. Those are actually interviews, and the players are responding to questions from the producers. So once I sort of understood how Survivor "really" works, I was able to work more of the player-producer interaction into the story, and it made the whole thing a lot more realistic. Believe me, that player/producer stuff wasn't something I would have come up with just as a Survivor writer. There's no way I could write stories as deep and in depth as this if I didn't get some behind the scenes help from Survivors along the way. And Rob C wasn't the only one who helped. He was just the one who helped the most. The reason Hawaii improved so much in the rewrite is attributed just as much to him as it is to me. Quote: Yep, once again I'll talk more about this in my episode two commentary, but Hawaii (and all my stories) are written in a very manipulative, very deliberate, serial novel way. Everything that happens in the story is supposed to lead directly to what happens next. And every episode (and section) is supposed to end in a minor cliffhanger. I did this very deliberately when I started because I wanted readers to get hooked and be mad when the episode was actually over. I based the whole concept of my story around Stephen King's serial novel "The Green Mile." You weren't supposed to be able to put it down, and I did that for a reason. Quote: Ugh. Don't ask. :) Let's just say I went to bed at 4:00 AM last night and it wasn't the first time this week. I'd estimate I spend about 40-50 hours on each episode overall. This is why I don't think I'll ever do another brand new original story. My wife would probably kill me. |

By the way, Mario, you've singlehandedly caused me to want to read MB's book. Not that I have any idea how I'd go about picking it up, but you've made me intrigued nonetheless. |

Hey Mario, I read that Survivor book and it is awesome. I wish I still had my copy. I always wondered why they didn't do one for all the other seasons.

Burnett's book is genius. I also thought there was going to be one after the Outback season onward, but that never happened. It is easily the best resource for getting behind the scenes of the first season, better than any available DVD special feature or deleted scene.

Don't worry. I've been a regular here at Survivor Sucks since pretty much the very first day of existence (my original username in 2000 was Sandwich Artist.) And during that time, I've heard pretty much every criticism some cute little anonymous newbie has tried to fling towards my stories. So you don't have to go out of your way to defend me. The story will go on no matter what. If I don't like someone's post, I just ignore it.

Re: This fanfic stinks | ||

Wow, took me like 400 years to read that :P Now that I'm finally done, random thought time.
I was an early criticisor... god... I can't spell tonight... YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN... of Mario's Hawaii story (liked Alaska and Greece though) and the reason why, was, well, if y'all read the non-redone original episode... yeah. That and the Lex-Sue machete thing that happens later on that I pray to god is retconned out of existence. I didn't mind Frank that much cause I was actually using Frank in a fanfic I was doing for some obscure non-Survivor fanfic site that I don't think exists anymore, so I was like "eh, he's *sort of* an all-star". As far as I can remember it picked up steam around ep 6-7? Post merge it was pretty good overall and I think the last 3-4 episodes were the best ones because I *think* (maybe I'm mistaken?) this is when Mario finally went solo? Can you fill me in Mario? I don't remember if you went solo at the end of Hawaii or if you did it in Alaska or Greece? Anywhoo I remember the climax of the season was great, particularly the whole finale which was well written, I was semi-disapointed with the winner but it made sense in the context. Anywhoo this is a fantastic "special edition," I prefer this redone version 100 times over the original, and at least Teresa's boot sort of makes sense this time! *Loved* the episode notes though I had heard alot of that stuff before from either Mario or people who'd gush over the stories and the "juicy gossip" they knew... great notes. :P I like Colleen's assessment that it's like getting a special edition DVD. Definitely looking forward to the rest! I have another question for you though Mario, are all of the episodes going to be completely super rewritten? I'd imagine most of the later ones don't need to be super face lifted, so I was wondering if you intended to completely 100% revamp the whole thing or just "fix the beginning" like Stephen King did with book 1 of the Dark Tower (but not the rest). Also, though your wife *may* murder you, I think you should do an "all-winners" edition after S16. The reason I'm saying this is because my *guess* is there will be about a thousand all-winners edition fanfics out there (I even thought about starting a thread after S16 to keep tabs on which winners win the most the second time around, and I may do that, because I still think there'll be alot of fics). At least if you did one we have a guaruntee that at least one of them will have some thought put into it. I'm sure if there are 500 winners edition fics, one or two will be decent but at least if you throw your belt in the ring we'd get at least one good one... think about it :P it's almost a year away. -M |

Wow, the mysterious Marcy speaks. You guys have no idea how long it's been since I've wanted to hear from him.
(Backstory: Back when I was writing Hawaii in 2002, Marcy and his friend Matt were working on a very similar project on their own. I had no idea their story existed, and the two of them had no idea my story existed. In fact I didn't even find out until about two years later. How did I find out? Well because Marcy and I were cast in a game called "Survivor Tonga" on the same tribe. And right from the start, he didn't like me. I never did know why Marcy hated me, but I figured out years later it's because Hawaii had stolen his thunder. Even though his and Matt's All-Star story was much better than mine, theirs hadn't been affiliated with a website and mine was. I had the publicity and backing of Survivor-Central behind mine, so of course my story got all the press. And apparently this galled Marcy, since (as I've frequently noted), the first few episodes of Hawaii were originally shit. All of a sudden, all Marcy heard in 2002 was "Hey did you read this great story by that Mario guy over at Survivor-Central?" Marcy went over to read episodes 1 and 2 of Hawaii and said, "This is absolute shit!! Our story is better!! Why is this fucker swooping in and stealing our idea!!" So anyway, Marcy and I have a long history on this subject, going back to the fact that Hawaii "stole" his idea and got all the press, while meanwhile both Marcy and I knew that the first few episodes of Hawaii were crap and shouldn't have been as popular as they were. As Marcy alluded to below, Hawaii really didn't pick up steam until about midway through. He knew it and I knew it. We've made up since, and now we are friends, but I've always wondered what Marcy would think about Hawaii when I finally went back and rewrote it to fix the mistakes. Glad to see he liked it this time. Because if he still thought it sucked, this time he might have actually had to hang himself. :-P ) Quote: See, this is the argument I was making about Hawaii for years. Yes it was very popular and yes it got a ton of press. But the original story wasn't any good until around episode five. That was where I really started to figure out the "formula" of an All-Star story, and I started to realize that four different writing styles wouldn't make a coherent story. So all along I knew that, yes, Hawaii ended up being a success, but it was in SPITE of the first few episodes, not because of them. I was so embarrassed by the first few episodes that I eventually yanked Hawaii off the internet and locked it in a vault. I vowed that nobody would ever read it again until I made the quality of the first four episodes match the next nine. Because, I'm sorry, when you end up doing a story as well-known as Alaska, you don't want some new reader stumbling onto Hawaii and saying, "Hey, this one sucks!" So many readers didn't understand me when I said "Hawaii sucks at the start," but Marcy always did. Marcy was a writer and he knew it. He was one of the few people (along with his co-writer, Matt) who wouldn't let me get away with half-assed effort, and I always respected him for it. Quote: That scene is in episode two (which I am currently working on) and I'll talk about that when I get to it. Needless to say, the important thing to remember about the original episode two is that I NEVER WROTE A SINGLE WORD OF IT. That was the first (and only) episode of Hawaii or Alaska that I never touched. I let the original writer have carte blanche with it, and as you figured out, I quickly learned never to do that again. Episode two is going to be completely rewritten from start to finish. It's the only episode in the entire story that really needs it. And that scene is gone, gone, gone, because it was ridiculous. Quote: I "officially" went solo with Greece. That was the only story that was written by "Mario Lanza" and not "The All-Star Five." Although behind the scenes, almost all of Alaska was solo. I'd guess I wrote about 90% of that one, and planned just about 100% of the story from start to finish. The only stuff I didn't write in Alaska, I just told Ryan Crist what to write instead (he was the best, and most prolific of my co-authors. His scenes were quite good, too, when he had time to do them.) In Hawaii, my mind is a little fuzzy as to when I took over. I know I wrote the last four episodes for sure. I did that because we were under a time crunch and I needed to get them done in like 5 days each. Oh, to have the energy of a young person again. But I'm guessing I took over for good somewhere around episode 9 or 10 in Hawaii. From start to finish, I probably wrote about 70% of Hawaii. But definitely some of the earlier episodes weren't mine. Sure, I may have edited them (I gave myself "final editing" privileges after episode two) but I only wrote about 25% of the story up to the merge. By the way, like I said, I gave myself final say over almost everything in the story after the weak episode one and the horrible episode two. In other words, even though this was supposed to be a "democratic" group project, almost everything went through me starting in episode three. No, I didn't write all of it, but I was the one who edited everything and posted it at S-C. So starting in episode three, just because of that, Hawaii starts resembling the rest of the series. Quote: The finale is good, but it was rushed. I'll talk more about this when I get there, but the problem was that my son was born on July 31, 2002. And the Hawaii finale was posted on July 31, 2002. Do the math and you'll realize I had to get that finale done under a crunch. I had a pretty fixed deadline when the story had to be finished. So it just wasn't as elaborate and well written (or explained) as the Alaska and Greece finales. P.S. I'll be sure to fix that this time. As far as I know, my wife isn't having a baby anytime soon. :) Quote: I don't intend to rewrite EVERYthing. I don't want to turn this into a morass of a project that will take months. I'd prefer to leave the good stuff as it was and just write around it. But that being said, I'm also a bit of a perfectionist. And I'm also a different person nowadays (5 years older + I have two kids). So I see a lot of stuff I did back then I would do differently now, in terms of style, subliminal theme, etc. So who knows? I don't plan to do a complete overhaul of the story, but I never know what I'll do until I actually do it. As usual, I pretty much just make this stuff up as I go along. I'll know how it ends the same time that you do. P.S. The Dark Tower analogy is a good one. Book one of the Dark Tower suuuuuuucked. Quote: *la la la* Can't hear you *la la la* Ask me again in 2010. -Mario |
