Thanks so much for introducing Pekin Express.  I just finished Season 4 in Africa and loved the program.  It's similar to TAR but also very different and looks much tougher.  It's 45 days long and each teammate only gets 1 Euro per day that can only be used for food, the race stops at 7 PM and they need to stop whatever  they're doing and find lodging.  They also carry backpacks that weigh over 37 lbs.

At first I didn't like the idea of teams hitchhiking/begging for rides and lodging, but it added a whole  different dynamic and teams would often end up staying with plain folks in their homes, sharing whatever food was given to them.  So teams got to get to know the country and its people more intimately and they (and the viewers) were often moved by the kindness of others.  For example, in Nairobi, when teams reached one end point they got to pick Medicine Chest and so took that to a clinic in a million person slum where they then spent the day and night or Wine which took them to stay with a wealthy family.  Later on, in a wealthy Johannesburg neighbothood, the sisters could not find lodging, turned away time and again by whites scared of crime even though they were with a camerman and informed this was a Spanish TV program.

And getting transportation was equally a challenge...and teams fought and cussed like crazy, and became closer, including a team who was paired up by the program.  Also, teams seem to be just regular folks, no mactors or athletes or "reality stars", and a team of sisters won (and not a lot of money--$25,000 euros--compared to TAR but felt their realtionship was changed and healed and their lives transformed).
