She reveals to Rob Cesternino and Nicole Cesternino that she is back in the hospital for an entirely different reason. Kourtney’s doctors recently discovered that she had a tumor in her abdomen. Kourtney has undergone surgery this week to have the tumor removed but the doctor’s established that this tumor was indeed cancerous. Kourtney is awaiting further test results to better know the condition of her health. We’re going to be thinking about Kourtney for quite some time and we will bring you news about her health as soon as we hear it. Shifting gears, Kourtney also describes her time on Survivor One World and her alliance with Monica Culpepper, Christina Cha and Nina Acosta. We also hear from Kourtney more about the feud between Christina and Alicia Rosa that erupted at the first tribal council of Survivor One World

Kourtney Moon learned that first hand (no pun intended) during the premiere episode of Survivor: One World when she fell and shattered her wrist during the first Immunity Challenge. She was ruled out by medical to return to the game, making her the first person off of the show. Her injury was a sad reminder of the dangers of Survivor. It was also a bad break for the show itself, sucking a lot of the drama of Tribal Council out of the show. But for Kourtney, the motorcycle mechanic from Austin, TX and mother to a 7-year old boy, it was a life changing experience. First off, how is your wrist doing now? Kourtney: It's doing a lot better, but still working on building up strength and range of motion. So you are still dealing with the extent of the injury? Have you been going through physical therapy? I had it in a cast for a while, but since then we were waiting for some paperwork to go through so I could get onto physical therapy as soon as possible. Advertisement Tell us about your experience with medical after leaving the challenge. At what point did you find out for certain that you weren't coming back into the game? Once they got the X-Rays. It took a while to get from camp to any sort of civilization. Once we got there I had to wait quite a bit to see someone who could even confirm that my bones were broken. To be honest, I had no sense of time really, so coming slowly back into the real world was a pretty rough transition even after 3 days. I didn't know what time it was, it was weird. Was there ever a real possibility of you getting back into the game? No. I knew it was broken from the very moment I rolled off of that net and tried to pull my hand back onto my arm. It wasn't going anywhere. You were only out there for less than 3 days. Did you have time to bond with anybody while you were out there? Yah! I was in the underdog alliance at the moment, but I had a pretty solid bond with Monica and was confident with Christina and Nina, but that was it. What was your reaction when you found out about the One World twist? It took a minute to register. But then I was pissed off because they had a better part of the island! Did you feel like you were in trouble to go home had you not have been injured and had your tribe lost the challenge? I don't think I was going to be out. It was pretty much confirmed that Christina was going to be out next. So me and Monica stayed up pretty late trying to figure out what we were going to do to keep Christina from going out. Was there anybody on your tribe who you thought was in control of the group? Yes and no. I had my assumptions but it wasn't very clear yet. I kind of felt like both Sabrina and Kim had potential to be puppet-masters. But I didn't know that for sure, I needed more time out there. Was this your first attempt at being on Survivor or had you tried out multiple times? It was my very first. To be honest, I had never watched Survivor prior to this experience. I guess you could say I was recruited. I did eventually have to fill out an application and submit a video, but they found me. Being a motorcycle mechanic, injuring your wrist had to probably be the worst injury you could have imagined. Has the wrist affected your livelihood? It already really has. I came back and tried to work, and the pain was pretty excruciating at first. I couldn't even decrease an engine. At the same time my boss had hired on an apprentice to take my place while I was gone, then he was robbed on top of that. But it was kind of a mutual thing, I wanted to keep working on motorcycles, like a hobby. You have a young son at home, and after you left the show you had made a comment about how you hoped he would take something positive away from your experience on Survivor. How did that go with your son? I think he was really excited to see me on TV. I think that excitement overruled the shock of seeing me break my arm. Because I had told him that I was bitten by a shark so, I had to explain that later (laughs). But it wasn't as hard of a blow, he was just really excited to see mommy on TV, but was also bummed that I wasn't going to be on any more episodes! Knowing now what has happened and how it has affected your life, do you have any regrets about going on Survivor? I try not to have any regrets. I would have handled a few things differently before I left home. But I think overall I was supposed to do that, like, all of those things that happened were supposed to happen. My only regret would be, me not recognizing that. But I have so, I'm pretty happy about everything.

The two tribes were fighting like cats and dogs at the One World beach, there wasn’t a complete immunity challenge, and nobody was voted out of the game. One of those things was because of the producers’ brainchild. The second and third were due to Kourtney Moon’s ill-fated leap into a cargo net. I had the chance to speak with Kourtney the morning after her unfortunate accident to find out what went wrong during her jump, why the women of Salani are underperforming, and which of her tribemates was “obnoxious”… Gordon Holmes: So what happened last night during your jump? Kourtney Moon: I thought I had my arms out far enough. And once my butt hit the net I was going to grab onto the net to stop the bouncing. But I guess what ended up happening is I didn’t have my arms outstretched far enough. Once the net hit its lowest point my arm absorbed the impact in a not-so-pretty way. I heard the crack. And, I’d never broken a bone, so I thought, maybe I just popped something. But, it was broken. And I didn’t know it was broken until I looked at my hand and it was just dangling. I thought, “Oh (expletive deleted).” Holmes: What’s the status of your arm now? Did they have to amputate? Moon: Oh God, no. They didn’t have to amputate. Holmes: OK, good. Moon: They ended up having to move it back into place and they weren’t so successful the first time. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. It hasn’t been quite the same ever since. Holmes: It had to have been disappointing to be derailed so quickly. Moon: It comes in waves. I think of what the possibilities could have been if I hadn’t broken my arm. It wasn’t a situation where I was voted out. Throughout the first three days I was approached by a lot of the male tribe members and I was making some really good connections with my own tribe members, so I was pretty optimistic. Holmes: What deals had you been working out? Moon: I wouldn’t say “deals.” My approach was that it was still early in the game and I was trying to feel everybody out. Holmes: A lot of people think the women did not come off well last night. Moon: As a female tribe I thought we should at least try to do things on our own at first before we ask the boys for anything. In that respect, I very rarely went over there to ask them for anything. At the same time, it was frustrating when some of the girls, that was their plan A. Holmes: Was much effort made to create your own fire? Moon: Actually, I set Kat up to make fire, because I was making the fire pit. They would work on it for maybe five or ten minutes at a time and then one of the guys would walk by and they’d be all “Oh…help me, help me.” It was frustrating to watch that. The cute girls were just running around, flirting with the boys, trying to get them to do whatever they could for them. Holmes: Did you know Mike was responsible for stealing the items at the beginning of the show? Moon: I didn’t until it was too late. I’d look down at the pile and think that we had more over there. I did remember having the axe and the pots. But there was so much going on. At one point Kat had her hand stuck in a jug and one of the guys was pulling on it and almost broke her hand. I was so preoccupied with that that I didn’t see anything. Holmes: Alright, let’s do some word association… Moon: That’s evil! Holmes: Oh, I’m aware. Let’s start with Nina. Moon: Nina…quiet. Holmes: Christina? Moon: Assertive. Holmes: Monica? Moon: Light, I can’t say enough about Monica. She just emanated light like an angel. Holmes: Kat? Moon: Frustrating. Holmes: Chelsea? Moon: I didn’t trust her. Holmes: Kim? Moon: She seemed warm, but I didn’t trust her either. Holmes: Colton? Moon: (Laughs) Emotional. Holmes: Adorable fuzzy hats? Moon: That’s actually my son’s hat! I have a small head and he has a normal head, so he asked me to wear his favorite hat on the show. It was a really big thing for him. Holmes: Alicia? Moon: Obnoxious.

In fact, she did this interview from the hospital! What is she going through now? How is her wrist? Does she think the women would have taken the challenge win if one of the men had been hurt instead of her? And what can she tell us about the situation on Survivor before she had to leave? Read on to find out! Kourtney made the kind of Survivor history nobody wants by being the first woman evacuated due to medical reasons and the first one to leave before the first Tribal Council due to such reasons – obviously not a “record” she was shooting for! But that pales in comparison to the current medical issues she is facing. Indeed, because that situation (which she discusses below), I wasn’t able to interview Kourtney in my usual manner, and was instead part of a group call. So some of these questions are from other interviewers, while the best ones (of course!) are from me. We’ll start with mine, since I was apparently the only one on the call who knew about her current medical situation, some of which she’d hinted at through Twitter, where she linked to a clip of Kindergarten Cop with one of the kids telling Ah-nold that he has a “tumah” and then talking about her “breakfast of champions” on Tuesday being “pain meds and a bag o' fluid.” Reality News Online: I understand that you are currently having some medical problems that are bigger than your wrist. Do you want to talk about that? Kourtney: I had emergency surgery this week – they found a tumor in my abdomen and had to remove a few things. It was a pretty traumatic experience. My dad’s in Afghanistan and my mom doesn’t live in Austin. I was in the hospital pretty much alone. And I’m deathly afraid of having my blood drawn. I went through all these tests and I had these sneaking suspicions something wasn’t right and sure enough they found a grapefruit-sized tumor on my ovary. I was hoping it wasn’t terminal or something crazy like that, but it was not benign [meaning it was cancerous]. I’m waiting back on some test results but my surgeon is really optimistic. RNO: Let me speak for all of us at Reality News Online and readers who have already contacted me to say we hope you’re doing better and were sorry to see you go in the way you did, and now I’ll only add similar thoughts on your current situation. I can’t believe you’re doing interviews now! Kourtney: It’s kind of nice instead of staring at the hospital wall. It’s a good change of pace. RNO: Well, continuing with that change of pace and getting into the game, if the situation had been reversed and one of the men had been injured instead of you, do you think your tribe would have continued the challenge or taken the easy win? Kourtney: They absolutely would have taken the win. I noticed some of the girls said it was kind of chicken$#!+, but come on, everyone was exhausted and tired! It was a really hard challenge and we weren’t all the way into it yet. It was an easy win and anyone would have done it. RNO: Since your time in the game was short, and the first episode focused more on Alicia/Matt/Chelsea/Christina/Michael arguing, is there anything about your game that you feel should be noted? Kourtney: I did find a little clip online that wasn’t in the first episode – the girls all wanted to eat chicken but nobody wanted to kill it. So I stepped up to the plate and did it. I’m not a country girl but I remember when I was a kid, seeing a farmer hacking the chicken’s head. And I wove so many palm fronds for both tribes and there wasn’t much about that either. I would like to say I worked my butt off to try to make tribe life as comfy as possible. RNO: I don’t want to sound callous and there is no easy way to ask this, but I have already heard from numerous readers and people on Twitter and the like, so I have to ask: Why did the women, in particular, seem to have problems jumping into the net in the way Jeff Probst told them to? Kourtney: That’s a rough question. I think everyone was just a little unclear on how to jump into the net. I think it just wasn’t as clear and concise as it seemed to be. Let’s leave it at that. Another Interviewer Question: Was there any instruction given on jumping into the net before the challenge started? Kourtney: Yeah. There was. My understanding was to put my feet out and go butt-first. Another understanding of mine was if you were to grab the net to help yourself from bouncing, that could save time. My main concern was to save time and not have my knees come up and hit me in the face, which is why I jumped the way I did. I honestly never heard anyone say anything about pulling my hands to my chest, but we were all excited and it could have been something I didn’t hear. Question: You’re still in the hospital and watched the show there last night – what was the atmosphere like? Were you a celebrity there? Kourtney: No, I didn’t tell anybody until they walked in and were like, “Whoa, hey.” They got a kick out of that. One of my friends and their baby and my ex-husband and my son were all piled up in the hospital room watching. Even thou we’re not together anymore, he could still poke fun at me and we all got a good laugh. Question: Was there ever a real possibility of getting back in the game? Kourtney: No. I knew it was broken from the moment I rolled off that net. Question: What was the process once medical arrived? My dad was in shock with the whole thing. I had not told my ex-husband so when I picked up my son, I had them both convinced I’d been attacked by a shark. Question: When you arrived at the beach, what was going through your mind? Kourtney: I didn’t think there would be any past contestants. I think it had happened too many times. I was more afraid of Redemption Island. [The two tribes sharing one beach] being the twist took a minute to register. Then I was pissed off ‘cus they had the better section of the island. Question: What kind of interaction was there between the tribes? Kourtney: Everybody went in with the mentality, “this is my tribe, this is your tribe.” That kind of stuck. Everyone was on that [wavelength] except maybe a couple girls who wanted to milk what they could out of the boys. Question: Before your injury, did you think you were going to be safe if you lost the challenge? Kourtney: I was – I don’t think I would have been out. It was pretty confirmed Christina was going to be out if we lost the challenge. Monica and I stayed up late that night to figure out what we were going to do to keep Christina from going out. Question: How certain were you? Kourtney: I’d overheard conversations and I’d even been asked would I do it [vote her out] too. Question: After seeing the girls throw each other under the bus at Tribal Council, are you kind of glad you didn’t have to go through that? Kourtney: Actually, I was looking forward to venting and telling some of the girls how I really felt about them. Question: Were you able to form any alliances? Kourtney: I was in the underdog alliance and had a solid bond with Monica and was confident with Christina and Nina. Question: Were you aware of the five-person alliance of Alicia, Kim, Chelsea, Kat, and Sabrina? Kourtney: Yeah, though not to the extent that it had happened. It was all in the body language, all in the eye contact. It was very transparent the way that it happened. Question: In your time on the show, was there a clear leader of any kind? Kourtney: Yes and no. I had my assumptions but it wasn’t very clear yet. I kind of felt like Sabrina and Kim had the potential to be puppet masters, but wasn’t quite sure yet. Question: What did you think about Alicia? Kourtney: She… oh gosh. She really rubbed me the wrong way, I can’t lie. Question: Did you have any idea Sabrina had found the idol and given it to Colton? Kourtney: I learned she’d given it to Colton afterwards but I knew she had found something because all she did was look for the idol all day, every day instead of working around the camp. Question: What did you think about her giving it to Colton? Kourtney: I think giving him that idol, she was putting a lot of confidence in his ability to stick around and have any clout. Question: Matt came across as arrogant – is that what you witnessed? Kourtney: I stayed away from the men as much as I could. My interaction with Matt were nice, so I was surprised to see the show. I thought he was a human Ken doll. He was never that way towards me. I guess I didn’t interact with him as much as the other girls did. Question: You mentioned at the very beginning of the show that you thought you might have trouble fitting in with the women. Did you end up fitting in with them? Kourtney: I was relieved to have bonded with the women I did bond with in the way that I did. Question: Who left in the game does not stand a chance to win and why? Kourtney: I would say Colton because he’s going to exhaust his resources if he doesn’t pick a side. Question: Why did you stop at catching only two chickens? Kourtney: Catching the chickens was not my department. The boys had the coop so the girls were keeping them in burlap sacks. That’s one of the reasons why we ended up killing one. We couldn’t make a little housing to secure them. The guys tried a few times but Chelsea was a rock star when it came to that. Question: You had mentioned in a web clip that you were concerned and hoped your son would take something positive out of this – how was his reaction? Kourtney: He was really excited to see me on TV. That excitement overruled the shock of seeing me break my arm. I think he was really excited to see Mommy on TV and was bummed I wouldn’t be on any more episodes. She left the game in episode 1 of Survivor One World. Quirky Kourtney appeared to be a classic underdog and it might have been interesting to see her story play out. Unfortunately, she made Survivor history when she broke both bones in her arm in the first challenge and left the game for obvious medical reasons.

After breaking her wrist during the first immunity challenge of Survivor: One World, Kourtney Moon, 29, was eliminated by default Wednesday – but not before a dramatic tribal council where her entirely female team imploded with drama. Moon, who is now home to Austin where she repairs motorcycles, spoke to PEOPLE Thursday about healing her body and ego, the catty dynamics of her tribe mates and what it was like sharing a campsite with the men's tribe. Has your wrist completely healed? For the most part it did but it is not quite back to the way it was. It's always going to be a little off. I can't believe how much I was smiling when it happened because it was really painful. I was proud I didn't cry on national television. Did you know you had broken your wrist when you landed on the net? I heard the crack – I heard it in my body – but since I had never had a broken bone I thought maybe I just popped something. It wasn't until I rolled down the [second] part of the net and saw my hand dangling that [I knew something was wrong]. I walked over to Sabrina and said, "I think I broke my wrist." But she was cheering so I don't think she understood. We were all so hopped up on adrenaline. *The One World* twist had you living along side the men's tribe. How was that? The most frustrating aspect of that was finding a decent place to use the bathroom. Somebody was always somewhere. It was a very small camp with two tribes. And they stole some of your supplies! Maybe I'm old-fashioned but it wasn't a very gentlemanly thing to do. I know they didn't come to the game to be gentlemen but come on! They already had a leg up with their brawny muscles so they were already going to be able to build a shelter easier. [That axe] was going to even things out for us and they stripped that away. Did you like being on a tribe of all women? I'll be the first to admit I've never meshed well with the popular girls. Most of my friends are men and the ones that are women are typically rough around the edges. I'm not the most athletic or the girl-next-door or the cheerleader type so it was kind of intimidating. There was a lot of infighting between the women at tribal. Some of the girls with the stronger personalities were just rubbing each other the wrong way. Christina was frustrated that the other girls weren't carrying their weight and just going [over to the guys] and flirting and I think Alicia was annoyed because she saw that Christina was being assertive and Alicia wanted [to be the center] of attention. What did your son think of you on the show? He's just seven so he was just really excited that Mommy was on TV. He's still trying to understand the concept and why I did the things that I did. You mentioned on the show you wanted to make him proud.** I want to be the best example I can be for my son. I just want to teach him independence and to take healthy risks. I did it for him. I know I did it for the right reasons.

I was anticipating getting off the net before I did – I was a step ahead of myself and face-planted. I could taste blood and my lips were swelling up. That just hurt. RNO: How are you now? Nina: Oh fine. It started to clear up pretty quickly. I got my face in the salt water right away. My nose was sore for quite a few weeks but it wasn’t broken. I had a black eye. RNO: Moving to the strategic part of the game, before you realized that the five ladies were in an alliance, did you try to form your own alliance or at least have in mind someone with whom you’d like to align? Nina: It’s funny you mention that. That alliance formed so fast, I was so surprised. We hadn’t even hit the beach and they had already aligned and knew each other by first name and nicknames. I was a little surprised by that. I was thinking strategy before we got to the beach and felt like I could align with Monica and Kim. Outside of that, I was wanting to wait and see where strengths and weaknesses were. I knew all along I could get along with Monica. In part it might have been we were closer in age but I could tell she was a fierce competitor. We talked a bit in the beginning and it was like we gotta have each other’s back. As it turned out, we were pretty close. RNO: Going into Tribal Council, did you think you had any chance of staying or was the result pretty clear ahead of time? Nina: I had a feeling I was going home. I thought there was a chance that Kat could be leaving but I was pretty convinced and had my stuff ready. I had a good idea I was heading home that night. I was not surprised. I think the look in my face showed I was not surprised. RNO: How did the target switch to you from Christina, who seemed to be on her way out in the first Tribal Council if Kourtney hadn’t been injured? Nina: Well, I’m not really sure how that happened. I think I started to speak up a little bit about the challenge and making waves about Kat and how disruptive [she was] and how her performance and attitude were hurting us as a tribe. That may not have been the best move on my part. In hindsight, it might have been better to build on Alicia’s hatred for Christina. I don’t think the five really cared who was going next. My feeling was that we were going to continue to lose challenges and it was just a matter of time. It didn’t make any difference [which of us went]. We tried to figure out a way to break the five up and it was hard. The most likely target was Kat and trying to let them know that it was in their best interest to get rid of the weakest player, but it was very hard to convince anyone of that. RNO: How frustrated were you to hear two of the majority alliance members saying if they had to do it over again, the alliance would have turned out differently? Nina: Wow! I know. I heard that for the first time last night and I thought if I’d only had a couple more days or even a couple more hours. It was hard to hear. I think I would have needed to bring Sabrina into that mix and maybe having a conversation with her would have sealed the deal. I didn’t have much conversation with Sabrina – she kept away from me and I’m not sure why. Maybe because she had her mind made up. I really worked hard on Chelsea and Kim and I thought I had them, but I think they felt sorry for Kat. There was a lot of crying going on and that played on their emotions. Like I told Kim, we don’t have that luxury of time. If we had several weeks, yeah, give Kat another chance. But every time she makes a mistake, someone’s going home. RNO: I know it’s a numbers situation, but was there any chance of you getting the five-woman alliance to replace Kat with you, so the numbers would have stayed solid for them? Or did they not trust your loyalty to the rest of them? Nina: I don’t know the answer to that. That’s possible. I don’t know if that’s true or not. I think it was just a matter – it’s possible they recognized a loyalty between Monica and me. I’m okay with that because I really think Monica was there to play and work hard and was a total team player and I admired her. There was no way I was going to betray that in any circumstance. I made up my mind on that. Could that have ruined my chance to win? Maybe. But I wasn’t willing to give up Monica. There was talk about getting rid of her a couple times and I didn’t understand it. There was no rhyme or reason to it, just because we were out of the alliance of five – the target kept shifting and it got a little old after a while. RNO: Alliances aside, which members of the tribe were getting along the best socially? Nina: I think the ones who were getting along best socially were Kim, Chelsea, and Sabrina. Sabrina got along well with everybody. She’s very good at communicating with people. She presents herself very well. RNO: What do you really think of Kat’s intelligence? Nina: I think Kat is not very bright. I think she’s not very well-educated. I think she’s very immature and immature for 22. She reminds me of a 10-year-old. That could be just the age difference but I don’t think so. I have kids that are about her age and I don’t have the same irritations with them. My kids are bright and can carry on conversations. It was like nails on a chalkboard to be around that girl. RNO: Would her immaturity and lack of smarts be a good reason to take her to the end as easy jury fodder? Nina: Oh absolutely! I think that if you were able to put up with her for that amount of time – that wouldn’t be my game plan but it could be for some of the other women. She’s definitely not threatening. But you would have to be careful with her flipping her loyalty [to the men]. If that’s your strategy, to take her because she’s weak, you’d have to make sure she’d stick to the alliance. RNO: Why couldn't the women get along? Nina: I don’t know. I think this group of women come from very different backgrounds than myself. Women function differently with each other. I have a lot of women friends myself but we all have the same mindsets – we work, we have families, we have atypical jobs for women, and we’re independent and strong. The other women on the tribe felt more typical of what I don’t appreciate in women. The snide comments, talking behind your back, constant talk of things that had nothing to do with the game. I played team sports so I have the mentality of typical guys who understand the concept of teamwork. In my law enforcement background, it’s important to have trust and depend on your partner. This group didn’t get that – it was more about socializing. It is a social game but there has to be strategy and there wasn’t a lot of that going on. I think Monica said it best – it was like anarchy. RNO: Did you or Monica or Christina do any searching for an immunity idol to save yourselves? Nina: Oh, I did! I was looking big time for that idol! We knew a few days in that Sabrina found an idol. She shared that with her core group and she found it for the guys. But without a clue, [our idol] could have been anywhere. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. RNO: I’m being told we’re out of time. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your time on Survivor? Nina: I had a great time! It was way too short. I really enjoyed it. I really appreciate the opportunity. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I wouldn’t change a thing about my performance or my strategy. I’m happy about how things turned out, believe it or not. RNO: Thanks again, Nina!
