OJ Simpson was a successful pro-football player but unfortunately that's not what he's well known for. The OJ Simpson murder trial was dubbed the Trial of the Century. In 1994 OJ Simpson's wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goodman were found murdered, and OJ was prime suspect #1. From the moment of the murders to that infamous car chase that gripped the nation to the trial, the OJ Simpson story created a media circus like never before. It was one of the biggest stories of the century. It was on the cover of many publications hundreds and hundreds of times over it's run. It saturated the news with the story getting thousands and thousands of hours worth of coverage, it was the subject of books, television specials and water cooler discussion. The verdict for the trial was even to this day one of the most controversial decisions ever and is still highly debated and analyzed.

She was the warrior princess on a quest for redemption. Since making her debut in 1995 Xena has become a cult classic and a feminist/lesbian icon in the late part of the 20th century. With her epic battle scream and swinging sword she became immensely popular and helped usher in a new era of female action heroes that came about in the late 90's and early 00's. Xena has spawned a huge franchise that includes action figures, videogames, and comics. She has been parodied frequently and is often mentioned on TV shows and movies.

#492 Public Enemy

Public Enemy was a hip hop group that came out in the late 80's and revolutinzed the hip hop genre. Their songs and image revolved heavily around the social and poltical environment that was going on at that time in inner cities in America. Songs like "Fight the power" and "911 is a joke" became an anthem for young blacks in the late 80's and early 90's. While Public Enemy was not the first hip hop artists to employ social and political messages in their music they were the most prominent of that era and helped pave the way for many artists that came afterwards.

The Marlboro Man was the face of Marlboro cigarettes for about fifty years and is one of the most iconic advertisements of the 20th century. He was the personification of the American cowboy and masculinity and helped turn Marlboro cigarettes into the biggest cigarette brand in the world. He came about in 1955 as a way for Marlboro to reinvent the brand to appeal to more people. The advertising campaign was extremely successful and sales went from $5 billion to $20 billion by 1957. But with success came controversy as anti-smoking organizations cited him along with other cigarette ads as being one of the causes of lung cancer due to him luring more and more young people into smoking cigarettes. Nowadays the Marlboro Man is rarely seen in ads due to the anti-smoking movement and has become a symbolic icon of the past.
