I was thinking it could be a kind of quasi-Island flashback, with pre-crash Island events as seen thru Desmond's eyes. (actually, I read an unconfirmed rumor on another board that a finale flashback involved Desmond "Hennessey" being released from Colchester military prison in England, with items returned to him upon his release being a gold watch and the same photo of him with the girl that we see in the swan station.)
As seen thru Desmond's eyes, we could be introduced to Kelvin... maybe their number-crunching predecessors were the two foreign computer techs that caused the "incident" and/or the big magnetic thing behind the cement wall that makes Desmond's fillings hurt. Penelope could be Desmond's love interest and Cameron could be the unhappy father who arranges for Desmond to go on his solo boat race, knowing he would get stranded, to get Desmond out of the way.
Then the promised "big reveal" of how flight 815 crashed could be shown (through Desmond's eyes)... heck, it may even show the crash as the result of what happens when the numbers aren't entered (another thing we've been promised).
And back at the hatch in real time, Desmond could mention that while he was away he was finally able to meet "him" - the leader of the Others - which (taking a wild guess) will be revealed as none other than CIA Operative Joe Inman. (another unconfirmed rumor being that Clancy Brown was also filming this week.)
Of course, this will all happen in part 1 of the finale, with part 2 being the big CampJack/Others showdown reaching its sad/surprising/wtf? conclusion.
